Craigslist is a popular place for Takoma Park listings. There are a great many apartment buildings along the Sligo Creek Parkway ‘corridor’ and its been a great neighborhood for decades ( take it from an ex-Takoma Park hippie). A couple of things to be aware of, East of New Hampshire Ave is not Takoma Park regardless of the description in the advert. Sligo Creek is at the bottom of a sizeable valley so biking to the Metro station or to downtown Silver Spring ( the nearest commercial area ) means some serious hills. On the other hand Takoma all in all is one of the highest areas in or around the city so just about all of downtown is ‘down’ from TP. Welcome to the area.

I took my eight year old grandson to the zoo on bikes without difficulty but we approached the Zoo from the north – near the Maryland line. This allowed us to stay entirely on the bike paths and off of the roadways. Having the bikes is an ideal way to get around DC as long as you stay off of the roads and on bike paths. One practical way to extend your reach and avoid motor vehicles is to take your bikes on the Metro. Bikes are allowed outside of crush hour times. Details are here: http://www.wmata.com/getting_around/bike_ride/guidelines.cfm The cathedral as mentioned above is perched at the top of one of the highest points of the city and cannot be accessed via bike trail although it is possible to get there on side streets crossing only one busy thoroughfare when starting from from the Zoo metro stop. The cathedral is quite a destination though.

Have fun here in the center of the known universe!

Actually I think I was confabulating this thread with the Channel 7 running red lights thread in my ‘hot under the collar’ ness. No matter. Still bugs the living SH*T out of me to read things like “15 prior citations”. Where is the big red letter of shame when you really need it?

I dunno, it’s mighty creepy going in the entrance to the Pentagon and seeing the real machine gun positions at the top of the escalators.

Herein lies the really galling element to this entire thread from my perspective. Do some thing stupid on a bike, as the original news report covered, and you might kill yourself. Do something stupid in a car and you not only get 15 more chances to keep doing it but you probably, eventually wind up killing someone else . I see a profound difference in the out come. I also see a profound difference in the perception of bikes versus cars that makes this both possible and unending unless there is a sea change in how the public is educated about transportation and personal responsibility. So I’m perfectly willing to countenance the suggestion that it’s just not as serious an issue that cyclists run red lights or flout other traffic laws as it is that cars do the same. Risk taking / stupidity on a bike is somewhat self regulating. In a VW Jetta or a Hummer less so.

Welcome back to the saddle Roger. I can really commiserate with you on this but if it’s any consolation getting back on the bike should be really rewarding and the ramp up time to back to normal at least from a fractured elbow was fairly speedy once I had served my time under doctors orders.

This was in VA was it not? I’m surprised the governor hasn’t already proposed legislation prohibiting women from discarding underwear without a written warning from Victorias Secret.

It makes for an easy hit for the TV news producers. Very cost effective to send an SUV with a camera person and news face a short distance from the station and report on something that makes a better visual than the ten times larger number of people that jay walked thru the various intersections at and around Dupont Circle during the same period of time that the camera crew was on site. This has nothing to do with genuine bike safety and everything to do with filling up a half hour evening news slot between the commercials. Interview a bike messenger as being representative of the larger bicycling public? Really?

Green pavement might make the potholes easier to see. Sorry to be flip but if you can’t get a city to fill in the holes in the streets that might toss you on your face bigger ambitions might be a bit out of reach. Sorry, I’m just grousing about the poor condition of the 15th St cycle track – or maybe I am grousing about the inability of a city like DC with a supposed commitment to cycle infrastructure not being able to do the simplest levels of maintainence on the existing facilities.
