ParticipantI am finished discussing this online, ask me Thursday at the happy hour if you wish.

ParticipantOK folks, you have convinced me to change my behavior in two ways. First when it comes to flagging stuff on the WO&D and other multi-use paths, I am not going to do it again. I still advocate for those of you that want to check and compare your own progress, establish private segments only you can see. My non-flagging statement does not apply to stuff down in DC mall area, no one will convince me not to flag those segments.
Second, I am banning myself from riding the WO&D during busy periods. Every time I do, I get too irritated by what I observe. I stayed away from April 2011 (when I ending up punching some guy and then got a lecture by a riding Methodist minister) until just recently. My almost getting into a fist fight again this weekend proves I have to stay away.

ParticipantWhen I run both my iPhone 4 with Strava and my GPS, a Garmin Oregon 300, I find the differences in distances, elevation gain and time across segments entertaining. The iPhone routinely shows a significantly longer distance and greater elevation gain than the GPS. When it comes to segments, it is most obvious on short segments since just a few segments can make a huge impact on your ranking.

ParticipantI checked the park this morning, and it is too wet to justify having a group ride there tomorrow. Hope to re-schedule it for an upcoming weekend.

ParticipantI am looking to do more to justify my title as MORE Fort DuPont Coordinator. Four rides and one work session last year were not enough. The plan is two rides per month and and three work sessions.

ParticipantI fear this ride may have to be cancelled due to wet conditions. I plan to check and decide Tuesday morning.

So, something less than 35 perhaps?
I am not shy in saying I am a hypocrite for blasting along in an adrenaline rage to catch that Fred. So what in VA is $5 per mph of violation, so that should be $100 fine. Tell you what, first to pick a bike related charity gets me to make that donation to them in their name. (I suggest Phoenix but it is your pick)

ParticipantI know what I am doing is not a solution to the growing problem. And yes I know at low use times it is ok to go quick. But based on my observations, there are a many riders that do not wait for appropriate times.
I see the need for something that will be much less popular than flagging, enforced bicycle speed limits.

If this is true then there is no such thing as a non-hazardous section, period, unless it is on a closed course.
There is always a potential for conflict with other trail and/or road users if people will ride recklessly or inconsiderately.
I was wrong to make such a blanket statement about the paths. I will still say I am against segments in the heavily used parts.
And for those regular users that only care about judging themselves versus themselves, you can make private segments that no one else can see, use or flag.

ParticipantI did not read everything above, but….
People were jerks before Stava, I know that, but things out there are getting worse all the time.
I am not the only one flagging segments out there. There were just a handful not flagged on the section I covered. I have ridden ever inch of the paths around here. I only flag those in the very crowded and heavily used places.
Based on the opinions I have got from non bike friends, (mainly runners) the hate for cyclists that builds from places the wo&d and rock creek park on the weekends is immense.
I am shocked stravas lawyers allow the public to create segments. I know that won that one lawsuit but suspect if a third party is involved in the next they will not.
I flew to catch the guy after that traffic cleared. Yes this proves my hypocrisy as I well exceeded 30 to get up to him. Am yes I found satisfaction to catch him on my knobby 29er while he was at full steam on his time trail bike on the aero bars.

ParticipantAnother advantage of a GPS over a smart phone, the accuracy. Most smartphones use a combo of their GPS chip, mapped wireless networks, locking to established routes, and distance to cell towers to calculate your location. It saves time and battery power but at the expenses of accuracy. The two images were from the same time on the same bike on the same handlebar.

So you flagged every segment on your ride, even those that clearly aren’t hazardous. So you lied. And you’ve made the labeling of certain segments as hazardous to be pointless. Thanks.
There is no such thing as a non-hazardous segment on a multi-use path.

Actually, she’d be at a huge disadvantage in Freezing Saddles, since she’d have so many November-December points (which would establish her baseline). She’d basically have to bicycle to the South Pole twice during January and February to give her team any kind of advantage!
Oh, maybe I should have read the rules. I have been riding a lot more this past month that I plan to in Jan due to a vacation overseas. Well Feb should make up for it as I plan to ride a lot then.

It’s weird but I have found so far that on these calm, cold mornings it is MUCH colder on the east side of the Anacostia than it is in DC or Arlington. By the time I got to the Douglass Bridge the past 2 mornings I was on the verge of overheating, but as soon as I get over the bridge to Anacostia River Rd, it’s cold. Surprisingly cold. Cold enough that the climbs up to Suitland weren’t enough to warm me up. Brrrrrr.
I was surprised by this cold pattern as well. However, I was fully overheated shortly afterwards. I simply run hot like an old car.

The good news is that the east side of the Anacostia is easy to avoid. You need to have a reason to cross those crap-hole bridges.
Which bridges? They all seem ok except the new MLK which is great.
And how are they easy to avoid if one needs to make it over that river?
