Nah. I found that climbing Loudoun County hills on a road surface consisting of 2″ of peanut butter mud on top of ice and snow on a fixie wasn’t really the challenge I was looking for. ;)

I rode on those roads yesterday on a geared bike. The re-freezing muck effectively made it a single speed ride.

I see the power of house developers as an additional variable. They will pressure Richmond to force Loundon country to pave the roads so they can sell million dollar triple wide/double highs to people that think sq-ft is the only measure of a house’s value.

Anacostia SE DC across the Anacostia River from the “main” part of DC. Focus on the areas near the Penn Ave and MLK/11th Street bridges.

That entire area is changing super fast, all the corner houses are already being bought by the smart and house-flippers. But you can still get a nice mid-block house for a bargain. In five years it will be just like LeDroit Park, full of trendy places to eat and people paying $750,000 for a 1600 sq-ft house with bad insulation and fancy trim. Some places are yes still a little sketchy and the schools are HORRID (no worse than Mt Rainer)

I think that’s true sometimes. Depending on conditions. In heavy wet snow that isn’t too deep like we had yesterday, a narrower tire can cut through to the pavement and get traction. Pretty hard to ride any bike in this stuff though. Cross bike better when you’re forced to get off and carry your horse. :D

What Rod describes was my experience yesterday and more than a few times in the past. The 35c chunky tires just cut into the snow and get to the pavement or soil below. Yes when you go over hidden ice it is a handlful, but that is why you don’t lean on such rides.

I had flailed around on numerous MTBs (26 and 29 with tires up to 2.4) until I started using my cross bike in the snow. Have fond memories and getting away from much faster friends who were on 29ers on snow rides. Normally this only happened once per friend, as they learned to bring their cross bikes the next time.

I still say cross bikes are far better in the snow that fat bikes.

I did find it plowed from Walter Reed up to at least Sparrow pond. It was plowed beyond that bit I did not go further.

My protest to the geographic limit is this art from Suitland MD. I only noticed the shape after uploading this sleaze ride.

Has anyone ridden East Capitol and Benning Road Bridges in the last day or two? I’m curious if they’re still snow-packed.

I too wonder since I need to ride over one of those or South Capital, Penn or MLK Tuesday. I plan to drive over South Cap tonight and will see what it looks like and report.

I too drove today and It took longer. When I ride in Tuesday, I might be wishing to be back in the car since the temp will be significantly lower.

The W&OD from Falls Church out to Gallows was 95% hardpacked snow and ice. A few melted spots, but I would rate it as “jarring”, “occasionally adrenalizing”, and “studded-tires-requiring”.

Side note, are you running those cross size tires tubeless on those Crest rims? Am torn between Crests or Iron Cross rims.

My best ever trash find was this early 80s Cook Brothers MTB. Lots of great parts from MAFAC cantilevers, motercycle brake levers with little adapters to use road brake cables, real Moots mount welded to the fork and Antler/first gen Deore parts.

I found it after getting dropped off a Cat 2 wannabee ride in the late 1990’s. It was in horrid shape. I sold the frame and fork to a guy starting a mtb museum in San Diego for $1500. Before shipping it out, I got an offer of $5000 from a silicon valley company that wanted it for their office, but it was too late.

He did not want the parts. I sold the crank and BB for $250, the Mafac cantis for ~$150 and the brake levers for $100. Was back in the late 90’s when people were crazy for such things. Bet you could barely give such things away these days.
