The snow fences are still there.

I have taken notice of that, too. Fantasized about a little trail vandalism, but know that is unwise.

Plan to check the trail conditions Friday after work. May cancel this if they are still too wet.

Since it is going to be so nice Sat and I am skipping the Monster Cross, I am going to run this ride this Saturday Feb 20th at 10 AM. No need to rsvp or commit, I am going regardless.

Bluemont Glacier is receding (with a little help from the county) now possible to pass it on the trail, with the minor exception near the restroom building, but the area is easy to ride on.

Arlington was very good at clearing it yesterday.

One of my bikes is a carbon frame Scattante. Tires are 700×23 Hutchinson Nitro.

Get rid of those 23’s. No one over 50kg/110 pounds should ever ruin such a narrow tires outside of a velodrome.

OK, after that smart butt comment, tires are the biggest variable in smoothness however that frame is the second. And it is just not the material, but also how it is built. There are very “soft” and very “hard” carbon frames. The same applies to steel.

I strongly suspect the Lemond was made to be smooth, while the Performance house brand was made with price point the most important variable and the ride quality was nearly ignored.

This is simply a wonderful use of Strava’s data openness. Any chance you mind my sharing it to a few folks beyond BAFS?

Also, any chance you would be willing to share your methodology?

I am signed up for this and now may be able to make it. I wish I had time to read the requirements, but may not. Does anyone know what they are? Anything beyond front & rear reflectors, redundant front and rear lights, and a reflective vest/belt, and reflective anklets?

As people have said above, a CX bike will be better and faster during parts of the course and a MTB will be better and faster during parts of the course. Just like the last two years, I will be using my 29er hardtail without a suspension fork. Last year I ran 35c CX tires and entered as a CX rider. This year I am planning to run 2.1-2.2 MTB tires and entering the MTB class.

One thing, you have to stop and pay the VA Park entrance fee the morning of the race, I think $5 per car. Instead buy a VA State Park pass before then. http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/passes
The annual pass is $66 and then you get free entry to that park and all VA state parks. Last year I bought one after the race, and they cut the entrance price off the cost of $66.

I like this bike cam video. The music and 8x speed may not be for some. This guy, Robert Carrico, is remarkably faster than I have ever been. He cuts through traffic amazingly. Then I love at around 2:30, a guy he passed tending to a crash, just dropped him like he was standing still. Shows the the old addage of how there is always somebody faster.

Look at the gaps in the “snow” fence, it won’t stop wind blown snow at all.

Yes it will. A few hundred years of use to proof to the contrary. The gaps are key, without the gaps it won’t work. It is about disturbing the airflow so the snow drops out, not stopping the wind flow. If you put a solid fence there the wind just goes over it with being disturbed and the snow is not greatly effected.

These two are the worst spots of the upper MVT that I see not resolving for days. Was snow from the Parkway dumped onto the trail at Humpback Bridge?

No, that was the adjacent snow fence working as designed. Slatted snow fences like that are great at piling snow behind them. Much better than solid walls or fences.
