ParticipantNice fatbikes. And Land Cruiser for the win.

Participant@Terpfan, MVT is melting, but remains unpassable as of this afternoon.

WOD is passable, but it takes some skills and preferably studded/wider tires…

ParticipantAll of you will have to encourage Boomer (and/or temporarily misplace all of his velocipedes) once I depart the area. We need to think of his health and family responsibilities. He really shouldn’t be riding in this dangerous weather.
Powerful Pete
ParticipantI second this. Boomer should stop riding for a few days (weeks?) and do his part for the greater DC biking community by shoveling all the MVT.
I am more than willing to pitch in with some supervision and technical assistance.

ParticipantI rode in to DC at around 13:00 this afternoon on the Custis. The points everyone else noted are all there. Also, please be very careful on the Custis overpass of Spout Run. Despite the sun and above freezing weather there were still rather large sheets of ice. It will only get worse and completely refreeze for our commute home.
Studs or walking speed on that bit today.

ParticipantHah! I can see through your attempts to convince Team 13 not to ride! Another saboteur in the Steve O mold!
Beware Team 13, these folks are all part of the anti-Team 13 cabal! Ride through the mucky weather and be victorious (cue noise of crowds going crazy)!
And anyway, my bikes are now so dirty and salt encrusted that more riding will change nothing!

ParticipantHousekeeping:
Our name is Romans 13:13… in Orgies and Drunkenness. If I don’t hear any howls of disapproval, I will update all the relevant bits tomorrow (Wednesday, 27 January) evening. For those interested, Romans won with a total of 7 (first or second place rankings) over Glacial Pacers (3 votes total in first or second place rankings) and Untrue Wheelers (2 votes in first or second place). All hail Orgies and Drunkenness (or should it be all hail Romans 13:13)?
As some of you know, I am departing from my Arlingtonian existence. Some might say Boomer drove me to this, but it is actually related to gainful employment – I will be moving to Lima Peru in early March. But I will be on work related travel (to Italy, yay!) as of mid-February.
Ergo, my riding will decline significantly (work does that, unfortunately) and will, once I arrive in Lima for the nice tail-end of summer, require me to use ample amounts of suntan lotion. Given this, my questionable captaining abilities will become even more questionable. In light of this fortunate development for all of you, in the power and authority assigned to me by no one, I propose Teresa A as our new omnipotent and omniscient leader. Why? She rides hard, is smart and can get us organized and higher up the standings. Oh, and she lives here.
Should you wish to counter propose others, and/or propose yourself, I hereby decree (again, with the authority assigned by no one) that this be discussed on a ride this coming weekend. Which should preferably begin with caffeine and end with alcohol. Just sayin’…
It has been a great pleasure, nay, an incredible honor, to lead you valiantly these first three-odd weeks of BAFS16. I will treasure our common winter suffering for the rest of my days. We are comrades in silly cycling in winter conditions. This will not change with my departure to infinitely more pleasant (at least meteorologically) climes.
And lest you begin to mourn my departure, fear not! I intend, like others before me, to continue to participate in these august forums. And ride with anyone willing to be seen in my presence whenever I return to Washington in the future.
May the wind always be at your back, and may you bury Boomer in the BAFS 2016 standings!

Pondering biking from Takoma all the way to Marymount tomorrow. Pretty sure I’ll be good into the city. Curious if anyone has info on M street, Key Bridge, Custis up to Lee HWY and Lee Hwy up to Old Dominion and Marymounts main campus. I suspect my usual sidewalk riding from the Italian Store up Lee to MU wont be possible and I’m not a fan of riding that road uphill with rage filled speed demons in giant metal boxes…
I can comment on Lee Highway from 5 points intersection (Koons Toyota) to MU:
1. Lee Highway through to the intersection with Lorcom (the stretch passing the Fire Station) has been cleared and is exactly two lanes – there is no sidewalk cleared at all. Ergo, you should take the lane if you ride up.
2. Lee Highway from the Lorcom intersection to Old Dominion Drive is also clear, but is more of a 1.5 lane – ergo, safer as a cyclist, as the cars more or less have to cede the “half lane” to cyclists.
3. Old Dominion Drive to MU is good, you even have a wee bit of the cycling lane cleared of snow.
Depending on how comfortable you are riding on Lee Highway, it can be done. I have not ridden Old Lee Highway yet, but visually (from my bike this afternoon as I was riding down Lee Highway/Old Dominion) it looked clear.
Hope this is helpful.
Disclaimer: this information is not meant for Boomer. If Boomer reads this post, Lee Highway and indeed all of Arlington is completely snowed in. Stay home and don’t ride.

ParticipantDon’t listen to this provocateur. He was a nice cyclist, but has been befriended by Boomer, the Cycling Nemesis (CN). He cannot be trusted or believed on cycling matters.
Although I have been told he makes a mean chili. But that’s beside the point.

ParticipantSalutations all.
I have picked up on your hints – I seem to have… uhm… err… misplaced the password to our survey. Once I find it we will have a name. 😮
In the meantime, hope you all were able to sleaze a wee bit in our wintery fun weather. Now the roads are being cleared, time to get back to it!

Can you believe that house is already sold???
Nope. I can’t. But I don’t pretend to understand the real estate market in this area. Or in the US in general, for that matter.

ParticipantOld ride, new studded tires, lots of fun.

ParticipantSlightly related – I just received an email from the CaBi folks that the system is shutting down at 19:00 today. If you have a bike out after that you can still return it, but cannot check out a CaBi until they reopen the system.
Due to inclement weather, we will be temporarily closing Capital Bikeshare at 7pm on Friday 1/22 to protect the safety of our members, bikes and staff. No bikes can be rented after the temporary closure has begun. Any bikes in use at the time of the closure can be returned to any Capital Bikeshare station with an available dock.
Closure and re-opening information will be posted to CapitalBikeshare.com,
Facebook.com/CapitalBikeshare, and Twitter (@bikeshare). Annual, 30-day, and Day Key members will also be informed of closure and re-opening via email. The Capital Bikeshare Severe Weather Closure Policy can be found at CapitalBikeshare.com/safety/.
Thank you for your cooperation.

ParticipantYay! Time to make sure you have your snow tires ready!

ParticipantYup on what Steve O said in his useful post and especially on Terpfan’s point: Trollheim gets to be extra special exciting in the wet/snow/ice. The number of folks who go down on that bit of path each winter is… impressive.
