And your suggestion is to add some English language signs too?

Correct. Leave these in place and add some English language versions.

FYI, Alexandria staff say that the signage was a response to complaints received. :-(

Why not experiment, add 1.6mm of aluminum foil?

Why are all of the new Bike Arlington / Walk Arlington PAL signs telling cyclists to yield to pedestrians only in Spanish (“Ceda El Paso” etc.)?

It seems like it’s more of a perspective thing. Riding on the 14th Street bridge feels smaller and more confined because there’s less room to maneuver unless you want to risk hitting the sides with your handlebars

Also 14th St hazards are scarier (longer drop, more cars moving twice as fast), 14th is much longer so no way would you be able to take turns with an incoming wide load,14th probably sees 5-10x the amount of bike and pedestrian traffic, and 14th sees more confused tourists (and gruff pathletes).

 That other cyclist is just plain wrong. Each sidewalk on MT Vernon Ave over 4MR is less than half as wide as he sidepath on the 14th St bridge.

Less than half? I really doubt that. Looking at aerial imagery, 14th St’s sidewalk looks to be 8′ and Mt Vernon Ave’s looks to be 6-8′.

Have you actually measured, or are you just guessing?

Thanks for asking, and for working to make the closure more bearable.

I wish there were signage at the top of the Potomac Ave switchback & stairs for those of us who ride Alexandria to 4MR to WOD/Shirlington.

I wish Alexandria would pave the desire path behind Shoppers Food, to connect Potomac Ave to 4MR and WOD.

Another cyclist pointed out that the sidewalk on the bridge across 4MR into Alexandria is wider than the 14th St bridge to DC, so it seems silly to try sending Eastbound 4MR traffic to the west side of the bridge.

Eastbound on 4MR, it’s easy to miss the severe left to Glebe before the Mt Vernon detour. Late signage, narrow path, hard turn.

Directing cyclists southbound on Mt Vernon past the strip mall seems needlessly risky. And while I’ve seen fewer than a half dozen people riding 4MR around Mt Vernon, nobody took the official Eastbound detour. We all crossed the run on the east side of the bridge after riding east through the underpass.

I’ve had it since 2013 and haven’t snagged it on anything yet. The end of the mount is about 5 inches from the centerline of my bike. The outside edge of my pedal is 8 inches out so it’d get hit first in close quarters. The peg itself is tough and screwed into a QR skewer. The skewer would break if you stepped on it with all you weight but everyday bumps and bangs? Nope. It’s just a chunk of aluminum. If anything, it’s protecting my bike from neighboring ones.

    Cool!

Looks like it might get beaten up badly at crowded bike racks. :-/

They are rain pants with zippers on the sides of the legs so you don’t have to step into them. Pretty cool, as long as the zippers hold up, and as long as the velcro waist thing works well enough to keep them up while you’re zipping.

I’ve owned a pair of rain pants with full side zippers for years. Remember the downsides of zippers (beyond added cost): increased weight, increased bulk, decreased flexibility of garment, increased likelihood of leaks.

My second favorite part of this is their “made to last you a lifetime” pitch. Rainpants do have an easier life than jackets, but, as somebody who’s used a bunch of different waterproof /breathable garments over the years, that’s hogwash. Sure, you can get a decade or more from really good stuff like Gore-Tex, but most of these fabrics don’t hold up well. This is especially true of fabrics with thin membranes bonded to the main fabric and unprotected by any other layer, which is what this product appears to use. I’m lucky if I get two seasons from rain jackets made from such stuff before the membrane gets worn away. Anyhow, their “lifetime” language suggests to me they either don’t know what they’re doing with the textiles, or they’re not being honest.

My favorite thing is what Dread pointed out – this isn’t a new product, it’s a new name for something that’s been around for decades, apparently marketed to people who know little about technical outerwear.

Also the waist velcro looks bad. Unless you’re really careful about alignment, the “male” portion is likely to abrade and damage other garments. My old full zip rain pants use snaps to avoid that risk.

The rain pants I use for cycling now have no zippers, just an elasticized draw cord at the waist. The ankles have velcro wraps but since the pants are a size bigger than usual (to slip over street clothes) I must use trouser straps to keep the ankles tidy – that’s the only thing I wish were different, and even in that respect this leg jacket product is no better.

    Nice application!

    1) I wish there were more immediate feedback after tapping, and when the new, sometimes very similar, image is ready. Maybe have the image opacity drop a bunch until the new image is loaded?

    2) Clarendon and Wayne: the bike lane is entirely in the top right quadrant. It would be nice if you could grab a double resolution image and only use the top right so it’d be easier to analyze.

    3) I was going to suggest time-lapse animations (3 frames showing a 10s span?) but now like scout’s argument that even clearly temporary blockages should be counted as obstructions.

No, not a shortcut. It looks like the driver entered by mistake and only realized the error when he encountered the end of the trail at Route 1. Unable to exit to the roadway without possible damage to his car, he backtracked.

This is due to poor signage on the cul-de-sac at the northern end of Commonwealth Ave which has been discussed in this forum.
