I’d love to know how much that feature added to the construction budget, how much it adds to the annual operating budgets, and the projected and actual frequency of usage. It’s good for Alexandria tourism, no doubt, but I bet it costs somewhere between $20,000 and $200,000 per ship voyage, not including the impact on Interstate traffic.

I wish that surprised me.

ParticipantThanks, everyone, for your advice. We decided to go with cheap mechanical disk brakes (low-end Tektros). Initial setup has been OK, kid1 seems to like them, even before the pads are bedded in. Only time will tell if they’re better than Jon’s dreaded BB5s.

And regardless of the fact that the nearest bikeshare to me is a mile from my house? And that at the speed I ride, I’d have to change bikes about three times to get to work while staying within the half hour limit?
Yes, regardless.

Bzzt. Wrong. The correct answer is “use bikeshare”. All forum members are required to join, regardless of their household bike count.

By preference? Or because that’s the wheels available?
Or because Rod runs a suspension fork he can use the inherently weaker Schraeder up front, but can’t afford to compromise rim strength in the rear of his hardtail setup? Like a mullet brake setup, but focusing on rim stress rather than braking power distribution? 😀

ParticipantA few arguments are sprinkled in this thread, though some are not fleshed out well : http://forums.mtbr.com/general-discussion/presta-vs-schrader-why-238970.html
Like : easy to deflate is great for rolling up a tube you just patched so that it takes less space (for those of us who bring a spare and try to do our patching at home).
Simpler, more reliable – no need to worry about air leaking around the valve.

Anyone joining me on the 31 mi ride tomorrow?
Sure, I’m riding the 31m route.
Anybody else thinking of using studded tires? The weather forecast certainly sounds sloppy.

Another thing you can do (or have a shop do) is drill out the rim slightly. When I worked at a shop, we even had a reamer the mechs sometimes used because it was easier.
Where’s vicegrip? I expect the reamer hand tool is also safer, less likely to damage the rim (e.g., cause stress fractures) than a power drill.
I’d just wrap some electrical tape around the base of a Presta valve so it fits tighter and doesn’t wiggle much when you need to add air. Consider wrapping the first layer sticky side out so you might be able to move the tape wrap to another Presta tube as if it were a proper valve shim.

Anyone know if they’ll happily hand me the 59-mile cue sheet if I show up at the early roll-out time on Sunday morning or if they insist that riders stick to the ride they registered for?
Why not print your own? They emailed ridewithgps cute sheet links today.

ParticipantGreat. Also, I’m assuming you’re to thank for that Ceda El Paso sign coming down in Alexandria (so the signage isn’t linguistically lopsided) – thank you for that, too!
I don’t think I’m alone in feeling grateful for BikeArlington far more often than I express it. Keep up the good work!

ParticipantLovely bike, and kudos to you for so generously seeking a new home for it.

ParticipantSounds good but my limit is probably around 40 miles,so I might need to drop out early…

I can assure you that it is not either of those things. I’ll poke at it some more.
Thanks. Maybe we should set up some of those wildlife cameras to catch whoever keeps removing only the English signs.
