ParticipantThanks everyone for the tips. We ended up just taking the Key Bridge and then down to the beginning of the CCT, which also involved some stairs, but was easy enough and while it involved more riding, so much the better! The CCT was beautiful – my first time on there, but will definitely be back with the kids since it seemed very kid-friendly (particularly the ability to get ice cream in Bethesda).

ParticipantWhile I can relate to the sentiment (I also see myself as a person who uses a bike for transportation, rather than a cyclist per se), he seems to think there is something wrong with the fact that there are people who see themselves as cyclists, and even avid cyclists. This is where I think his argument falls short. What’s wrong with avid cyclists? The more, the better. These are the people advocating for better infrastructure that we regular people then get to use. These are also the people inventing (or at least buying, and therefore encouraging the invention of) really cool new gear and gadgets, that eventually, even regular people find handy. Go cyclists!

ParticipantDid my shutdown commute today. Ie. picked up the kid from preschool in the new weehoo. I think she may actually have shouted “weehoo” she was having so much fun.

ParticipantThanks for hosting! The kids had a blast. We almost made it back before dark, with just a little roadrash to show for the outing.

ParticipantI’m furloughed, so we can come! Can we get to your house from the path?

ParticipantI did my regular bike commute today – yay! Witnessed a scofflawntractor at the intersection of Maine avenue and Ohio drive, “blowing” through the light just as it turned red. But he did it at 2 miles per hour, in slow motion, to the great consternation of all the waiting cars. This reminded me of the interaction last week with a different lawnmower at the same intersection which actually SHOALED me as I was waiting at the light. And then proceeded to go through the intersection at 2 miles per hour. I got a good chuckle out of that one.

ParticipantUnless we are furloughed, won’t be able to make this unfortunately. Late arrival at work after kid drop-off makes for late departure at the end of the day. The kids will be so disappointed. They kept asking when we could go back to the restaurant that has the “whassup” guy.

ParticipantMy car-bike commute this morning took me from my free parking spot straight to my first meeting at the Commerce Dept. Haven’t been there in over 10 years, so had no idea about bike parking. Didn’t see any immediately apparent bike racks, so went across the street to the Ronald Reagan building where there were racks almost completely surrounded by motorcycles and scooters. I squeezed my bike in and went to my meeting. Bad idea. When I came out, my bike was completely hemmed in on all sides. Luckily a good samaritan came along and helped me lift my bike out over the top. Thanks friendly fellow cyclist!

Maybe you can rent the Arlington bike trolley? You could have the kids help pedal, and after dropping them off maybe you could find some slugs to help you get to work (I can’t imagine how hard it must be to pedal that thing all by oneself)!
I don’t know what the Arlington bike trolley is, but maybe if I get enough people to help me pedal, I could get to work on time!
I actually went multi-modal today and it seems to be a winner. Put the bike in the back of the car, got the kids to school, drove to free parking and then 5 minute ride to work. Made it on time, saved myself 18 dollars and at least got to ride for 10 minutes today!

ParticipantCount me in. I’ve been deemed unessential

ParticipantSecond day of commuting by car and it’s killing me! I have to do the morning kid drop-off this week and there seems to be no alternative to driving. My car commute takes me right by my bike commute route (MVT and 14th street bridge) and I see all of you there, enjoying the best biking weather of the year. This evening the MVT looked like a superhighway with all the pedestrian and bike traffic on there. Sigh…

I think there are other questionable names on here. I saw Dirt at Kidical Mass and he actually looked quite clean….

Or more like, old is how you feel at the end of the week after riding your bike in the cold rain in a headwind. I think those may have been the conditions when I joined the forum

ParticipantIt was nice meeting some of the folks from the forum and putting names with faces. And thanks to Shawn and Dismal Scientist for showing me the way along the W&OD.
