    Strava heatmap.

    Parking along the W&OD:

If you want to park at Metro, West Falls Church Metro is the last metro station to park at to avoid HOV-2, as far as I know.

To be fair, the citizen dashcam shows that the police driver did initially stop for the red light as required. It’s hard to tell if he was completely behind the stop line, but it is clear that he wasn’t blocking the crosswalk at all while stopped. His error was his subsequent attempt to make a right-on-red when it was not safe to do so. Because he didn’t check to see if anyone was about to use that crosswalk. If the bicyclist hadn’t been there, that would have been a legal turn.

To me, the citizen dashcam does show the cruiser with it’s rear wheels over the white line, so unless he stopped first before crossing the white line, then proceeded and stopped again, then he didn’t break any laws, but I doubt he stopped twice.

Ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday last week. Here are some photos on Facebook. I see that they didn’t paint the bridge.

Also, I have updated the route in the OP to one that skips Maple AVE altogether, and shaves 30 Seconds, by changing the part to the south of Maple AVE to use Echols ST and East ST instead. Echols ST is bumpy, but is short.

For those who don’t know the area, there is a daily traffic jam for 1.5+ Miles in the afternoon going west, average speed is 7 MPH, and it takes 12 Minutes just to through it. It seems that it ends around Lawyers RD, leading to Reston to the north, or I-66W to the south. If more Vienna residents bike, it would improve the traffic in the area.

From the Post today “Fairfax Police Chief Edwin C. Roessler Jr. said that Crawley was in the roadway, bound to obey the laws which apply to vehicles, and that he was going the wrong way on the highway — north in the southbound lanes — and didn’t exercise caution before entering the intersection.” What Chief Roessler seems to omit from his statement is that the police car was blocking the crosswalk so the cyclists had to leave the crosswalk to get across the street.

    Just say’n

Link to article in the Washington Post. This is typical of crashes involving peds/cyclists. The driver side of the story is heard first, and taken as the truth while the other party is either unconscious, in shock, confusion, or laying in a hospital. The police department had to hear the driver story first, and seemed to make conclusions; even before hearing the cyclist side of it. In this FCPD blog, they say “the officer was stopped at a red light”. Not so. He crossed the white line, so he is the box so to speak, running a red light. The cyclist didn’t leave the crosswalk until the cruiser moved, to avoid a collusion. So it seems that both at fault, the officer for running a red light, and the cyclist for not waiting for the walk signal. Only one is ticketed, but more importantly, it gives the wrong driver-education; that they don’t need to stop at the white line, that’s what it’s there for.

but I should also include Falls Church. Does FC have a bike/ped planner? Anyone have contact info?

Here is FC Bicycle Master Plan page, clicking on “Staff Directory” shows emails and phones for the people that dkel mentioned.

The first video shows that the police car was stopped after crossing the white line, in other words, it didn’t stop before doing a right-turn-on-red. It may have stopped before crossing the white line, then stopped again over the crosswalk, but I doubt it. FCPD conveniently didn’t include the stopping footage.

Here is a street view of a decent implementation in Rockville, MD of a 2-Way Cycletrack with parked cars that’s more comfortable than DZBL. Cars are parked the “opposite way” of a normal bike lane, so it’s easier to watch for opening doors, and less injury when colliding. Now if one-way PBL go the opposite way, we get the same thing, but requires design changes at intersections, to make sure that cyclists follow the proper direction.

Why is it when someone dies, they don’t report whether that person was wearing a helmet?
