I’m interested in the Midnight Saddle rides – when is the next one? (Eager to get riding again…)

This may not count as road / trail conditions per se, but 7 dead mice on the MVT near DCA and Gravelly Point this morning.

I assumed this was the result of rodent control. Or perhaps they need better lights and reflective tape if they are going to be out on the bike paths that early after sunrise…

It was a little windy last night and there is some debris on the Bluemont Junction trail.

I had a similar issue fitting a small u-lock inside the triangle that had 2 water bottle cages. Mounting on the top bar prevents access to the water bottles, mounting on the back of the seat post has other disadvantages. Mounting to the top of the top bar (so that the lock is directly under and in front of the seat was an option. In the end, I chose this position – with the lock flush with the wheel, pointing backwards.

I rode with the lock like this out to Leesburg and back last weekend, and then down to Mt. Vernon this weekend. It was fine, my legs didn’t brush against the lock at all.

This position might interfere with a pannier but I usually only ride with one bag, on the RH side.

That was exciting! And brisk! I was wondering, on the way in to work this morning, if it were possible to attach a sail to a bike. The google machine gave me this.

Just rode W&OD from EFC to Bluemont trail to Ballston. I was riding a Trek hybrid w/ 28s.

Brandymore Castle is still snow packed with some ice.

W&OD has good lines on it but also some ice. I took my time and even walked a little bit (2-3 minutes) before finding some pavement. This was about 0.2 miles west of the overpass before where Custis and W&OD intersect.

The hill at Bluemont is exciting but doable.

Fairfax Drive has a lot of snow and ice in the bike lanes.

So, the bike paths have been plowed, but snow and ice remain on perhaps 75% of the surface.

It took me about 60% longer to get in today than normal. I didn’t fall, but there were definitely days when the ride took less time.

I hope that the trails melt enough that the ice goes away enough so that there are clear paths to take back.

Custis was ok this morning except the shady elevated parts N of Rosslyn. The paved parts of the CCT were fine, but the muddy parts were very muddy.

Madison Manor near EFC – roads are mostly clear except for huge icy patches. I walked to metro instead of biking in today. Saw 2 bikes fall on W&OD.

It ought to be ok by this afternoon, right?

I went through it at about 700 this morning. The water level was a little lower than your photo, but still up to the bottom of the hubs on the bike. I came out dragging a branch about 4 feet long. It was stupid to go through but I met someone coming the other way so I didn’t think about it until it was too late. I guess I should have paid attention to the squishing noises coming out of his shoes and his scuba gear.

Just FYI, 4MR under Wilson was pretty damp this morning. Would recommend crossing on the surface.

Are the data from the counters available publicly? Are they posted in real time on the web?

Rode in this morning at 7am on Custis & W&OD. C. is mostly clear, but crunchy in spots, especially where it dips under overpasses. The connector from the Custis down to Fairfax Drive is a luge run, however, and there is a serious pile of snow at the bottom where there is a conduit into the (drained) Beaver Pond.

    Photos attached.
