ParticipantThanks for the great detective work, all. Honestly, I just thought I’d give it a try cleaning off normal grit from my rides, nothing crazy. I may use it sparingly on unpainted components but that’s about it. Would hate to sand away the paint.

Participant….doh!
perfect, can’t wait to give this a shot.
Will aim to get it done before the weather gets to be too much of an issue.

ParticipantThis is exactly the thread I’ve been looking for. Did you do the ride yet? My parents moved to C-ville recently and have been dying to figure out a reasonable way to bike down there. Curious to get anyone’s thoughts on this and will definitely study up on that map you shared!
Cheers!

Participant+1 to the camp of people dumb enough to think this kind of thing sounds fun.

I haven’t ridden it yet either. More liked rode up, stopped, rode a little bit more, stopped, walked, tried to ride again, failed, walked, then rode the flat part, walked, and finished.
http://labs.strava.com/flyby/viewer/#63662777 – Start at 6h19m. You can see where I stopped, and walked.

Looks rough, very impressive. That said, maybe you’d have more success if you didn’t have 6 hours of riding on your legs by that point!

Have you actually ridden Coxey Brown?
Negative. Soooo, put the fixie away for this one, huh?

ParticipantPete is spot on! I especially like the Coxey Brown option. 2 miles/1000 feet of climbing. Now, anyone dumb/crazy enough to do this?? I even made a Strava route so we dont get lost!

ParticipantWhen is it safe to call it “Boat to Work Day”???
Cycle tracks be damned, I’m taking the Potomac River to work tomorrow!

Thought I’d start an easy to navigate thread to discuss what has actually worked for us during the polar vortex
I’m kind of a biking minimalist and went with the less-is-more approach through the vortex. I had mostly the same as others here (just much less). I will say that I went with my Nike “hyper warm” running tights and base layer and cannont recommend these enough – perfect for freezing cold temps, light weight, not bulky. Also lobster gloves continue to blow my mind – how can my hands stay so warm in such ugly gloves!?

ParticipantWow thanks! This looks great – I’ll give it a try as soon as it warms up.

ParticipantIn the wake of the (amazing) Clarendon Cup last weekend, I couldn’t help but think a course similar to that (albeit with fewer hard turns) would be great for something similar to the Red Hook Criterium. No reason why New York City should have all the fun.

Oh, and leave shoes at the office. They’re heavy.
haha, I have about 6 pairs of shoes stashed under my desk for this very reason.

Via friends, I read this list yesterday. It’s not one sentence/piece of advice, it’s a list of DO’s and DON’Ts…but perhaps it can help?
Update: that list is more geared to leading your perhaps-reluctant friends on rides or getting them to join social rides, but perhaps a few items are useful.

Brendan – thanks for the share – this guide is just what I need. Much appreciated!

ParticipantThanks everyone – these are great! I honestly worried that we’d all get on our soap box about bicycle rights and all that – great to see such awesome answers.
Will definitely include these (and keep them coming!) – I’ll find a way to post the presentation on here next week.
Cheers!
