In response to some PMs, here’s some of the (few) things I’ve found:

    http://www.fujibikes.com/bike/details/ace-203

    http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/earlylaunch/hotrockboys/hotrock206speedstreetboys

    http://www.schwinnbikes.com/bikes/kids/mesa-20-boys

Disclaimer: having not actually seen any of these, I don’t know if they’re any good. There seem to be a lot more choices once you hit 24″ (options from fuji & specialized, and trek & diamondback & kona & felt, etc.) I have a question out to Greenbelt about whether the one above is a 20 or 24. :)

With regard to the single speeds, I’ve had the opposite problem of finding something with good gearing. May be a matter of what size you’re looking at, I guess. Mostly it probably goes back to my original lament about finding a store with a good selection. :)

Basically something without a suspension fork that will add a couple of pounds and no functionality, smoother tires, room for a water bottle, a few gears. Not a full-on skinny tire racing bike, but something more optimized for the kind of gravel trail/street riding we do as opposed to technical MTB trails. As I look at kids bikes, I’m fascinated that they’re about as heavy as mine; there definitely seems to be room to cut some weight without compromising strength. My son can do a solid 8-10 miles on his 16 inch, but I feel like he’d be a bit happier on hills if he wasn’t hauling around a bike a third of his weight. I didn’t worry about this when we got my daughter’s bike, and experience with the pros and cons of that one have me thinking a bit differently on this one (especially since we have two boys and I’m liable to have this bike for quite a while.)

+1 on thinking “they are too chicken to tell mom they aren’t wearing a helmet”. If they’re actually trying to make a statement about somehow being cool, I think they’ve missed the mark.

the original rails were pretty flat; the further west you go, the more vertical detours around expressways you’ll find.

To the racer drafting the 18 wheeler on the FFX county parkway trail (downhill on the detour toward the greenway; I really hope the truck was somehow construction-related or that guy really shouldn’t be driving): I’m not sure I’d ride that close in the blind spot of a big truck, but when the truck exited the detour back onto the parkway, I was really impressed with the way you cut off the oncoming car and then zipped around the truck, managing to avoid the left hook. Had it been me I’d need new bike shorts at the very least.

You have to first read about the whaling ship Essex to get into the right frame of mind.

I was so heartbroken when the wheel guy said the Velocity Deep Vs wouldn’t be strong enough for me and that I should go with the Chukkar instead. I could take paying $400 for a hub to support my weight, not being able to get orange rims was a real gut punch though. Brooks does offer an orange B17 though, at least I can get that to match the tape.

    I tried the orange B17, it’s more brown. :(

To they guy on Fairfax going through the Glebe intersection in Ballston with head down and no hands on the bike due to the necessities of texting: do the enormous balls make it hard to find a comfortable saddle?

I think it needs more transparency about the data it’s using. E.g., put all the bike lanes, etc, right on the map instead of just the chosen route. Then it would be easier for people to understand why it does what it does things and add corrections.
