My commute is pushing 500 feet of climbing over just 7 miles, so its not exactly flat.
Stoplights and downhill stretches where you have to watch your speed are the worst for keeping warm. Having climbs just means your clothes freeze when you stop.

Participant7 minutes start to finish this afternoon (line was about an hour at 6:15am; I waved off). I will never again waste my time trying to vote early.

My ride to the polls at 6:30 this morning is best described as: brisk. My clothing kept me at the right temperature, a balance between freezing and sweating. Also, using the paper ballot saved me about 15+ minutes in line. I don’t get why so many people prefer the electronic route since the paper ballots get scanned immediately.
I wonder the same thing every year, especially since the experts in the field are fairly unanimously scared of the electronic voting machines. But for some reason people prefer blinking lights over speed, simplicity, and security.

ParticipantPotomac has crested at point of rocks and is about there at little falls.

ParticipantLooks like the potomac has crested at paw paw, still climbing at point of rocks & little falls stations.

I rode from Cedar Lane to Old Reston Avenue around noon today. Path was fairly clear except for a large number of twigs, acorns, and the like; here were the only larger issues:
1. Thick cover of leaves between southeastern border of Vienna (1/2 mile west of Cedar) to Park.
2. Thick cover of leaves a bit east of Hunter Mill
3. Tree blocking most of trail about 1/4 mile east of Hunter Mill (you could squeeze by it)
4. Very thick cover of leaves between Sunset Hills and Wiehle AveThe only places I didn’t see a mess of leaves is where a stream overflowed and washed them off. The best spot in the neighborhood stream valley trail is the false trail created when Irene overflowed, scooped up the gravel, and deposited it along the stream–this storm washed off all the leaves, and left a very clear gravel trail to…nowhere

I saw something that said that flood waters on the Potomac are not expected to crest until tomorrow (Wednesday) evening. That means that the Shirlington Connector between mile 0 of the W&OD and the Mount Vernon trail will likely be flooded as early as this afternoon. Water was only about 12″ below the trail when I rode through there before 0600 today. With water steadily rising, it will be smart to take those sections VERY easy and pay attention to the barriers that they have set up.
Hmm. If it hasn’t crested yet, better get the hip waders.

ParticipantI guess the police can start investigating now. I hope none of the evidence has moved and nobody’s forgotten anything.

ParticipantAgreed: I hate it when people pass in “the middle lane”. That’s the sort of thing that sooner or later gets someone (not usually the passer) killed. It’s rare that there’s no opportunity to pass with a clear oncoming lane, though one may have to slow for a bit until the opportunity arises.

ParticipantI hear there’s a whole freak show on Capitol Hill…

ParticipantJust like with cars, slowing down can work wonders.

I don’t understand the big issue about the high fees in D.C. that’s been all over the news recently. Um, if you don’t like the high fee, don’t run a red light or speed!
Crazy talk!

ParticipantIf conditions warrant, I use the same single-ear earphone/mic I use for making calls. A single mono earphone sounds less weird than half of a stereo pair.

ParticipantI, on the other hand, am a huge fan of red light cameras. They do change behavior, and I don’t really see a down side. (No, I don’t care about increased incidence of low speed rear-end collisions; I’d rather have a thousand fender benders than one squashed kid–it’s just a hunk of metal getting bent.) Also, as a driver, I find that traffic flows much better when you don’t have “just one more” car going through after the red and getting stuck in the intersection.
