Do not ride Oak St in Vienna without studded tires. It’s an icy trap! That entire route from Gallows to Idylwood I’m sure went untreated, because there were some really scary patches, but thankfully the few cars that passed me gave me wide berth (and one dude gave me a thumbs up, even).
My commute today would’ve been a lot less terrifying in general had I not been lazy and mounted the damn studly tires already.
Yeah, I live on Oak St. and even with the studs it’s scary.

ParticipantI am sooooo over Courtland. Though he had some good ideas here. I think we should dedicate 1/2 of the roads in DC to cycling, and of course turn them into wooded areas, which will require razing some buildings along them. It would be quite nice really.

ParticipantAnyone ride the TR bridge today? Or the MVT from the bridge to Rosslyn?

ParticipantWould have been nice to ride this bike this morning.

ParticipantOk, time to vent.
Me: cyclist riding home on W&OD last night at approximately 7:30-7:45 p.m. I stopped at West Street in Falls Church and waited for cars to stop (or for no traffic) to cross in the crosswalk. When car approaching from my left stopped, I started to go after seeing that car approaching from my right was some distance away.
You: car approaching from my right. You either were driving faster than I’d calculated (and really too fast for West St.), or you actually accelerated to try to get through the crosswalk before me. Or maybe you were playing game of chicken with me. (You had to have seen me due to my lights and fact other car stopped and I crossed in his headlights.) Anyway, you won. I slammed on breaks and turned to left to keep from hitting you/being hit. I fell to the ground in the crosswalk as you drove through it. I got up and rode home, but suffered cuts and bruises and am limping due to ankle injury. Couldn’t ride today, and may be off bike for several days. We’ll see.
You won’t read this and you don’t care anyway. Just venting.

As someone who walks the trails every day with my dog, I actually don’t give a crap about people calling passes. For one thing, I have my headphones in, so I don’t hear most of them anyway, but I walk in a predictable fashion and maintain positive control of my dog. …
My biggest issue as a walker is the disconcertingly large number of riders that call their passes but then proceed to buzz past me with only inches to spare, despite having 4 feet of pavement to their left to get by…if you really want to be a courteous trail user, save the ding and move three feet further to the left instead.
I’ve been riding on local MUPS commuting year-round for 20 years, and I call my passes because some walkers do not “walk in a predictable fashion” (which I take it means in a straight line on the right). Some walkers and joggers start to turn without looking. Ride on the W&OD or Custis or whatever MUP and sooner or later you’ll hit one of these folks if you don’t call your passes.
I agree that calling a pass doesn’t give license to buzz the walker/runner. And i know cyclists do that.

Put it this way: would we be supportive of a camera setup at a stop sign on the W&OD that mailed a ticket to every cyclist who didn’t come to a complete stop and put a foot down before proceeding? I think we would probably bitch and moan about that even more than the AAA complains about automated cameras.
We would. I get tired of the so-called “war on cars.” But I think the columnist had a point about how hard it is to fight tickets, and how tickets are not always justified. At least parking tickets. I’ve had some where the signs are so confusing I thought I’d parked legally.

Great question. I think the future LBS is really a coffee shop / bar that services bikes and showcases gear. People come for the bikes but pay for the food. If Revolution and Java shack were co-located I’d spend more money at both. If Java shack sold beer I’d never leave.
Cyclelife had a great coffee bar. didn’t keep them from losing their lease.

ParticipantGreat resource. I’ve ridden rides from Dkeg’s website but had forgotten about this resource. i wish i’d checked it today before trying to ride my road bike on Waterford Road. live and learn.

ParticipantThis is a great century if you like rural roads, and a small century (not that many riders).

Me: the frazzled guy trying to teach multiple children the rules of polite use of the trails. (Keep to the right! Stay in your lane! Signal! Not so close!)
You: kitted up people on road bikes passing between the trying-to-be-good kids and the oncoming baby strollers on the other side
When I first started riding local MUPs, I thought kids didn’t belong there. I was wrong. Kids have never ever caused me any problem. Lots of kitted up guys have.

ParticipantI was the victim of a cyclist hit and run one time and I called the Arlington police, who confirmed it was a hit and run and that I could file a report. They mailed me the form, but I never filed it, for the obvious reason that there’d be no way to actually catch the guy.
