ParticipantI have no idea on the value, but unless you are a good judge of carbon fiber frames or have reason to trust the seller, I would try to have a independent bike shop check it out. I wouldn’t rely on her team mechanic. My limited experience is that a shop will give a bike a quick check for no charge.

ParticipantPerformance carries a lot of Fuji bikes; they might have something that it is functionally close. I saw the 1.1D listed on their web site after running a google search but with no ability to choose sizing. My apologies if this is something you checked already.
MFC
ParticipantThanks. I suppose I need to check my facebook settings and give it another shot.

Post up on the DC Used Bicycle Marketplace http://www.facebook.com/groups/dcusedicyclemarketplace/
There are a few stories of recovered bikes there.Do you need a member invite to use that site? If it’s the one I’m thinking of, I’ve tried to join but my membership just says pending.
Good luck to the OP on getting your bike back.

Go to Phoenix Bikes. They have buckets of used equipment. You basically can go dumpster diving. They will sell it to you cheap.
There is also Velocity on Del Ray.

Last night after work I went to the Nationals game with a friend who has season tickets. I biked down there and he took transit from near Chinatown. Even with the time it took me to unlock the bike and check-in at bike valet, I was a little faster getting down there. Bike valet is fantastic, it was nice being able to leave the bags on the bike and enjoy the game relatively unencumbered. The game was great too, we won in extra innings.
On the way home I had a few reminders of why I love this area so much. I went by some of the monuments at night and enjoyed the relative quiet on the roads. I had the MVT almost entirely to myself from DC to Alexandria aside from 2 cyclists and a pedestrian. When I got into Old Town I came upon a GEICO ad being filmed at King and Union with a handful of people watching from across the street (if you see one in the coming months with a guy selling peanuts, that’s the one). From there I decided to meander around the streets of Old Town instead of staying on Union the full way back to the trail.
There is something about riding at night on a warm evening that is truly magical. I think I’m going to have to find some more excuses to stay out late this Summer.
MVT is a great night time ride in fall or early winter when its not too cold, especially when there is a full moon out (and no werewolves, of course).

Bontrager Select wheelset, 9-speed – currently fitted with SRAM 11-28 cassette. Maybe 4000-5000 miles.
Most of you know where to find me – pretty easy to deliver them to you or have you pick ’em up.

I’m interested if they are still available.

Pantani, you should check out the DC Used Bicycle Marketplace facebook group; they come up form time to time (and I swear there was a 54cm recently?). But in general, that’s a bad choice: no disc brakes.
Are you talking about Bike House? I went to their facebook site but could not find where they list things for sale. Thanks.

I manually synced it from my NBC profile (worked fine, just not automagically).
That’s consistent with what I read, thanks. Its a a bit of a pain, but I’ll live.

Up to 192 now – just signed up for this year. Nice to have the integrated Strava logging!
Any idea if the Strava logging works? From what I read on the NBC website yesterday, its been buggy.

All,
Inspired by links like this: http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/10/06/the-true-cost-of-commuting/ and http://www.mrmoneymustache.com and other financial independence bloggers along with the overall frustration of being incapable of driving 16 miles in less than 40 minutes around here, I’d like to give bike commuting a try. Here’s the details:I’m 37, and not in as good a shape as I should be. Currently 215 vs. my historical norm of 190. I live in Kingstowne, VA, near the intersection of Kingstowne Village Parkway and Manchester Blvd. I’m a contractor, and 3-4 days a week I head up to Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. 1-2 days a week I head into my corporate office in Crystal City. I’ve got MANY questions (lights, clothes, backpacks vs. panniers, etc.) but I think 2 of them really trump all others. I’ll figure out the rest after I get started as I go along.
Question 1. I currently have a 2010 Cannondale Synapse Carbon Six that is currently an excellent piece of wall art. It’s my only bike, but what would you all recommend to make it a suitable option for commuting? Should I be trying to swap out wheels/tires for something a little thicker than the road tires it’s currently got? Should I consider spending $300 for a cheap commuting bike off craigslist/Nashbar instead? I rode the bike recreationally (<15 miles usually) when I lived in SE DC and Shirlington, but haven't ridden it much since the move to Kingstowne. (2+ years)
Question 2. My route (I think) is going to be to start out DRIVING my truck with said “wall art” over to a coworkers house who lives 300 feet from GW trail in the Fort Hunt area. Then I’ll dismount my Lumbering Decadent Couch of Combustion and get out in the real world and ride up the trail to either JBAB (across Woodrow) or Crystal City. What should I know about doing this? It’ll take more time than driving overall, but hopefully save me a trip to the gym.
Obviously riding directly from home to work from Kingstowne would be preferable – but not realistic given my current conditioning and the existence of hills. That’s a goal for the future. This Kingstowne area also doesn’t feel very bike commuter friendly but I’ll leave route options from Kingstowne directly to another post. I’ve also got the bare basics for biking clothes: bike shorts, helmet, wicking running shirts, etc, so I’m ok there – but no commuting experience whatsoever. Have access to showers at work, no problem.
Thanks for any help y’all can provide!
In addition to the conventional advice you will get, watch out for the wooden bridges on Mt. Vernon Trail (the trail near the GW Parkway) when it is wet or cold. They get very slick very easily. Stay hydrated, especially in the heat, but in the colder months as well. Get some basic lights in case you have to ride in the rain, and even an even better set of trail lights (LED lights that can cost up to $100 or more) if you ride after dark.
Best of luck with it.

ParticipantI’ll be there unless I wimp out because of the cold. But I did make last year’s Boat to Work Day!

Tell me about it. I think we should replace the Movement for Credible Cycling with the Movement to Bring Back Friction Shifters.

Couple little tricks that can help:
loosen the brake cable completely so that you can pull the brake lever all the way to the bar, then take a rubber band and wrap it around the brake lever and the drops of the handlebar. You’ve now freed up one more hand to fiddle with the broken cable. also, shift the shifter into the smallest cog, or innermost chain ring (depending on which model Tiagra you’ve got, it’s either the thumb button on the inside of the hood, or the small paddle shift lever). this will line up the cable end with the cable access port. using a small pick-like tool makes things easier (most shop mechanics will take a section of a spoke and grind it down until its sharp and use that to finagle out a broken cable end).
Thanks.

WABA recently received a couple of new hardshell bike boxes, so we don’t need our collapsible one anymore. It’s one of these: http://www.bikemania.biz/bike-boxes/crate-works-plastic-collapsible-bike-box-pro-xl-c.html
Let me know if you want it. Free to the first WABA member who asks!
If they are in good condition and are somewhere metro-able in DC or in Alex./Arl, I would be interested.
