This is why the Riide bikes are limited at 20mph. Trying to pedal faster the electric motor acts against the user.

ParticipantIt’s too bad that the MVT is really the only feasible option for that N/S corridor. It’s not built for the type and volume of traffic it sees. I was SB on Wednesday night and almost got clocked by someone heading north in my lane on one of the curved flyovers.
It’s why I usually take mostly street routes most of the time… I can maintain momentum in a less risky environment! (because there’s fewer pedestrians to avoid, of course, not that other thing)

ParticipantThanks for this thread pointing out the Strava widget… I’ve been annoyed by getting to the app and double recording.
Tired trip in this morning, took it easy, still went about my average speed ~ 12.5 mph moving average.
I drove yesterday because of the heavy rain in the morning, but it’d let up by the time I left the house and it was clear in the evening too… and I wished I’d ridden.

It looks like I missed mello yello and Arlingtonrider by leaving as early as I did (just after ian74). “Kind of obnoxiously late to work” is a very good way to put it if I had stayed much longer.
Yeah, I’ll always be on the later end, with flexible work hours and an infant son to get ready for daycare, it’s hard to leave the house much before 7:30… which puts me right at the end of CCCC even if I’m able to make that.

Rumor has it that Reba talked the Commonwealth Joe coldbrew trailer into stopping by the water park early next Tuesday, which could bring revolution to the CCCC, comrades.
Did this happen? I swung by about 8:20 but didn’t stick around… used the pump at the hand-dandy service station and skedaddled. That pump does NOT want to stay on the valve.
edit: I see from Strava that it did. Sorry to have missed it. I have a choice every morning of getting going early or staying and getting my ridiculously cute baby ready for his day at daycare. Guess which one wins!

ParticipantShowed late for CCCC … 8:20 or so, but I used the time I would have spent drinking coffee helping a new commuter with a flat. Lesson 1: replace your patch kit after you use it once, the glue dries out (my patch kit is from BTWD 2013, I don’t see why they can’t make the glue in little blister packs like pills, so you only open one per patch). Lesson 2: your spare presta tube will fit in a schrader wheel, just leave the retaining nut on it before poking it through. If I’d learned lesson 1 I wouldn’t have had to change a flat twice.
Vos was very nice, he’s been riding bikes for 2 years now (road bike for trail riding), and just picked up a commuter bike to go from Del Ray to Rosslyn. Today was his second day commuting by bike. I hope he continues.

I’m porting this over from the bike thefts in DC garages thread. A Venerated Senior Member said:
Are there any alternatives to carrying a lock when you have a breakdown that can’t be repaired roadside/trailside?Sure… log in here, start thread in Commuters forum, and someone who works close can put it in their office or bike cage for the day!
or… find an unused lock, one someone’s left on a rack, in an out of the way place, and drape it over the frame of your bike to make it appear locked. I’ve done this before for short periods of time on UVA’s campus… never around here.
of course, it’s all supposing that you are near something… breaking down on the CCT halfway to Bethesda it won’t do you much good one way or another if you have a lock or not.

ParticipantI’ve passed the RadWagon parked at the Courthouse Wells Fargo, but haven’t gotten to talk with the owner. He’s got it set up with a nice rack and child seat.

ParticipantPlus: The weather system that was all stagnant humidity broke: what wonderful weather! Almost brisk!
Minus: Ugh. Crosswinds on Ohio and my deep profile wheels make it feel like riding a kite through soup.Re: Passes & Trails. Streets streets streets. I’ve done MV + Custis + Veitch three times now and I’m happy with my surface road alternative. I’ll save the Veitch route for Tuesdays after CCCC.

ParticipantI was just watching my Strava Flyby’s for this morning and it’s pretty funny to watch all the early crowd stop at the waterpark. It looks like a big group of you went on up and over the 14th street bridge right as I was coming off it. One of you may have even been the person that almost got plastered against the jersey barrier when some jackrabbit made an unsafe pass around a CaBi.

ParticipantIt was great meeting people this morning on the late shift!

ParticipantI take a very similar route, the opposite direction. I ride a fixed gear and the climb up 14th street (I continue up 15th street to the top) is very steep, but manageable. I find that if I time it right I can build up speed on the bridge and follow a car through the stop sign, and turn uphill behind it… it conserves some momentum, and carries me some of the way up the hill. Starting from a stop (if aforementioned timing doesn’t work and I have to yield) is difficult. I’ve done the Custis to Veitch and it does cut out that hill but I’m not a huge fan of that section of Custis.
Iwo Jima: I use the path because it’s easier to dodge tourists than tour buses. I had a bad experience with one in the circle. Coming downhill through there you have to watch your speed, especially in/around the port-a-potties and the Netherlands Carrillon.
Your second option once you cross to DC doesn’t look great. If you don’t want to ride down the mall (perfectly fine) you can use Ohio Drive down by the Jefferson and work your way up past the fish market to 7th St.

ParticipantI will be with the 8:00 crowd. 0700 is too early for me!

ParticipantExcellent. Time to sort through and label the spare parts bins.

ParticipantKLizotte, I stopped and took the same picture yesterday afternoon, after not stopping on Monday. You totally beat me to it.
