There is a very nice rolling hard case right now at the Community Forklift (hyattsville, md) that looks the right size for a bike box. I’m not sure if a full size frame would fit without S&S couplers, but probably. Take your measuring tape. It’s $30.

Not affiliated, I just shop there a bunch.

Hmm… maybe I should cross post on the ‘deals I saw’ thread.

You can link to the “print edition” in the upper right, then scroll to Page 13 for it. Good story, I’m glad you got your bike back! The real worrying thing is the <5% recovery rate for bike thefts. It just proves that these crimes are not taken nearly as seriously as vehicle thefts (although the apprehension rate for those is dismal too, even though the vehicle itself is usually found, in one state or another).

This morning was a gorgeous ride. I finally replaced the cog after lots of struggles getting the old one off, and the new one meshes with the new chain and is perfectly silent. The feeling of cutting through the cool(ish) morning air and hearing nothing but the wind is exhilarating.

Was a perfect commute until 1/4 mile from work when the WM “food waste recycling” truck passed me. Garbage trucks stink but when it’s all compostable and already fermenting / whatever it does, it really really reeks. Yuck!

My plan to install it at work failed. Lockring came off easy peasy, but I could not get the original cog to budge with the chainwhip. I rode home fixed without the lockring and did a fair bit of skip stopping to try to break it loose.

I’m not riding today, but will have to try to reverse rotafix this thing off the hub when I get home tonight. Here’s hoping it doesn’t strip the hub threads!.

    “IRONMAAAAN”

    Has he lost his mind?
Can he see or is he blind?
    Can he walk at all,
Or if he moves will he fall?
    Is he alive or dead?
Has he thoughts within his head?
    We’ll just pass him there
    Why should we even care?

There’s plenty of high mileage 2004-2009 (“gen 2”) priuses (ahem, sorry prii) out there. High mileage = lots of highway miles in the HOV lanes of 66 and 95… which are pretty easy miles, all things considered. No financing needed, they’re about the same as a standard car 2 years newer. The battery costs are coming down, but really look at how many prius taxis there are and those things are the ultimate torture test for batteries.

Also, a lot of the hybrids try to be upscale. Now you have Lincoln selling hybrid and standard at the exact same price, so some of the cost premium may have just been for features. Prius is a little hard to compare, since the closest you could come was maybe the Matrix.

    personal anecdote:

Insurance pays x,xxx dollars for the ’01 Camry that was totalled while parked in front of our house (drunk driver, 4am Sunday morning, hit & run)
My wife drives a lot for work. As in commutes to Catonsville, with at least quarterly trips to Annapolis and Easton.
So, we look at hybrids. for an additional 2k we can buy a 2005 Prius with 100k miles on it. The missing wheel covers, a couple cigarette burns on the interior, and dent in the door keep the purchase price well under $10,000. We pay cash, discover that DC charges exactly $0 tax on “advanced vehicles”. Insurance is cheap, our dogs fit in the hatchback w/ the seats down, and it becomes our trip car. Gas savings ensue. 50k in two years, we’ve been averaging 48-50 mpg.

Also, it fits a bike in the back without removing wheels.

A different commute in today – in to the city to meet 1/8th for a bicycle gear transaction (literally!), then out to Landover.

Beautiful riding weather for July. <80 and mostly cloudy... I'll take it. Humid and I'm still sweating and working hard, but it's not near as bad as it could have been.

Riding in was interesting – there were OTHER BICYCLISTS out there, and lots and lots of CaBis. I got a bit turned around, and made one boneheaded move around Stanton Park, where C street comes in. Heavy traffic kept people from moving though. I probably added 2 miles by unnecessary turns / going the wrong direction.

Finding my way out to Benning Rd was a little interesting. I’m definitely not familiar with those roads. Thank goodness for smartphones, or I’d have been sunk.

On the plus side, the Marvin Gaye Park Trail is pretty nice. The entrance on 42nd and Hayes NE is lined on both sides with crepe myrtle that’s all blooming. Very pretty. Where the trail hits NHBorroughs Ave it’s newly paved and marked with sharrows. There is also a massive community garden complete with greenhouse that’s right on the trail. I wish there were a good way to cut through the neighborhoods before hitting 704 / MLK Jr Hwy, because that road is awful and none of the neighborhoods connect to each other.

All told, 20 mile commute this morning vs. my usual 10.

Toyota did an ad campaign when they rolled out the V, and there was a ‘public vote’ on the plural of Prius… it is now Prii.

Add another to the ranks of the minivan jealous. I just drove one around Washington State for a week, with 6 passengers and luggage, and it got better gas mileage than my Subaru, fully loaded, on mountains (yes, the trips up Mt. Rainier were awful for the overall average).

I can fit 2 bikes in the back of the Subaru without removing wheels, but it’s a PITA. I can’t wait until it dies completely and I’m forced to get a new car. Here’s hoping it kicks it before 200k.

Oh, and I am also surprised that the cars w/ bike racks aren’t any more courteous to bicyclists. Not that I see that many…
