A New Pointless Prize – Go find some flags!

    • Jan 3 update: Looks like I might need to come up with a tiebreaker :) ….I’ll brainstorm something

    Kris

Might I suggest the following in that regards:

    • 1st tiebreaker: person w/ most days ridden
    • 2nd tiebreaker: person w/ most miles ridden

The things you think about when walking the dogs in the early AM. ;)

For the bigredboiler: Is this considered a flag? I saw a few of these on my ride today was wondering whether it could fit the bill, but was able to find an alternative.

Count me in – Chris M (12125159 because it’s out there so why make it harder for you to find?)

To confirm: is this the total number of “new to you miles” in this period, or the number of unique miles in this period even if you’ve ridden it before? For example: riding 2 miles on the MBT yesterday (that I’ve ridden a zillion times) would be “unique” if just looking at this period, but is not “new” to me so doesn’t show as “new” on Wandrer this year. Do those count?

Same question…there are very few “new to me” miles in my immediate area!

    Christmas Begins with Christ

I’m not sure how this is going to work out for me, most of the flags on my ride out here in the wilderness of suburbia are US flags. Oh well, at least it makes for a more “in the present” ride looking for flags vs just putting in the miles over the next 2+ months.

I remember that when The Golden Road collector’s set came out, one of the late night hosts joked: “The Grateful Dead announced they are putting out a 12 CD set. There’s no word yet on which song it is.”

As someone who plays in a Grateful Dead tribute band, let me tell you it can be hard to practice those really lengthy songs. As a keyboard player, when practicing I fast forward through a lot of guitar solos :)

That was definitely meme’d about quite a bit: Which song will it be?

Don’t be startled if some random guy approaches you at a gig — that might be me. I’ve not been to Settle Down Easy, but I may have to ride over to catch a show (and a beer or two).

…I’m always unplugged when I ride my bike, and I have my collection of Grateful Dead for when I’m in the car (I can make it all the way cross country and back on one flash drive!) And, I have two!! Plus an old Ipod with even more!!!

As my friends and family are fond of saying “so that’s like one song, right?!?”

True story: We were heading down to OBX and leaving Pierce’s Pitt BBQ in Williamsburg when The Other One came on. The kids wanted to change the station and I told them not until the song was over. We were almost at the NC border when it finally ended (it went into Wharf Rat, which made it impossible to change the station lol).

As for the contest, thanks to Beth for sponsoring it. I learned a lot over the past few months about the Civil War (and finally made it to the Antietam Battlefield, which I’ve been meaning to do for years). I’m fortunate to live near Centreville, where lots of Civil War action took place early on in the war, making it easier for me to consistently get markers and streets. (I actually left both markers and streets on the table and probably have enough left over to get me through the end of March!)

This is my third year doing FS and my second committing to a pointless prize. Like last year (where I focused on the ParkFinder prize), this really opened my routes up and exposed me to a lot more of the area that I typically didn’t ride (such as heading down into Manassas). Hopefully there’s something like this for next year to keep my routes fresh!

    Thanks again, Beth!

I’m sure a lot of us have ridden by this marker at the W&OD and Hunter Mill Rd. Today was the first time I stopped to really read it.

I’m pretty sure a few of us have not only stopped over the past couple months, but also snapped a picture as well! 😎

An unofficial as “you are a top 3 person” the answer is no!! I am doing my best to not duplicate any roads. It’s hard, because the same road the can have many different troop movements close to a city. And, FYI, got squat today, so you gained on me again.

I’ll accept your unofficial answer as an official answer (for me anyway). :D

They must’ve gotten there early before the Slurpee machine broke. 😡

I hope you don’t mind, but I’m so going to poach this street at some point, especially as my known list dwindles down, I hope you don’t mind! ;)

Can I get a clarification please!

On my ride today, I documented Lee Highway, but although it’s named for Robert E. Lee, used it to reference the troop movements between Centreville and Manassas as part of First Manassas (and the resulting retreat afterwards). Am I able to use this street on a separate ride to reference the current namesake (back then it was referred to as the Warrenton Pike) even though it would be in the same jurisdiction (Centreville). I’m good either way, but just want to be sure I don’t run afoul and/or miss a potential street (especially on crap days like this where the close-to-home markers and streets are getting fewer and fewer as the game progresses!!).
