I have not seen it, but I understand cyclists have used the RFK north lot to ride. If they want to race, perfect place for it. The course outline and the FIA-spec curbs from the American LeMans Series race of 2002 are still there.
We are not welcome there. Security gets called rather quickly. There used to be one of the biggest Crits in the area held at RFK, it would attract national level pro’s and was known to be one of the deepest women’s fields on the east coast. The Permit process to hold an event there is basically impossible for anyone without a six figure budget.

50/50 for me, but I’m going to try my best.
Unacceptable. Tell your boss that you need to leave early.

ParticipantMelissa and I are planning on riding there. Weather permitting of course.

Saw these on the W&OD too, Nats publicity?
I saw these red/white W^ paint marks all the way out on Oaklyn Dr in Potomac. There are a ton on the W&OD, Custis, MVT and there were a bunch in front of the Marriott on Eads. I would love to know what the hell they mean, and more importantly who is responsible.

Yeah, it might be interesting …. but it might be super boring like last year. Seems like that’ll be clear pretty quickly once they hit the hills. I love cycling, but will admit that watching the flat stages is arguably more boring than watching golf. The Giro this year was fantastic to watch. I added the Fios sports package for that and the tail of the spring classics; I was considering dropping that after the Giro, but guess I’ll suffer through and watch the Tour too
The tour is on NBCSN, which is not a part of the sports tier. If you want any vuelta coverage you will need to have Universal Sports, though.

ParticipantVikingMariner, there is a lot of good stuff in there. Thanks for the feedback, especially when it comes to vendors and crowd interaction. I don’t know if there was any discussion about a beer tent for this year, but that is something that I would love to see next year also. Maybe that my inner cyclocrosser speaking.
Unfortunately, the venue and the actual race course is one area that we are extremely limited. I thought that this years course was much better than last years course. But there is a lot of uncertainty about potential construction next summer and what that might mean for the venue.

ParticipantWe (NCVC) have a juniors squad that welcomes all abilities. We have 2-4 practices a week during road season, and 2 practices a week for cyclocross. There is always at least one coach, usually 2, and a few parents who are also racers at each practice to help. We work on riding in a pack, pace lines, and cornering with all the kids. The older kids will sometimes work on attacks, bridging attacks and sprinting.
For kids new to the sport I seriously recommend cyclocross. CX practices are usually at bluemont park and williamsburg middle school.

Disappointing vendor turnout. Maybe next year will be better.
How so? If you would like elaborate a little I will gladly see what we can do to make it better next year.

So, the 9-12 juniors races, are those “competitive”? Like, would my 11 year old look out of place on his mother’s old Mongoose hybrid? He’s interested in the race, and he’s got some legs, but he doesn’t have the right bike and I worry it’s not quite his style. In addition, I’m not interested in any trips to the ER.
For the most part yes, the 9-12 race will be full of kids on road bikes wearing team kit. But there are always a few kids who are are there as their first race on a hybrid or mountain bike. It is usually a small field and I am sure he would be fine safety wise. It is USAC sanctioned and you would have to purchase a one-day license ($15) in addition to the entry fee.

Matt’s route is better than this. Turning on Montrose doesn’t cut off much of Braddock , and both Montrose and Chowan are fairly narrow with no shoulder. Chowan is hilly, poor sight lines.
The only problem with Matt’s route is the section of Braddock before Montrose, which he rides very fast and very early in the morning.
Have you ever ridden Cherokee? You could go edsall to cherokee and go down 2nd to get to southland. It looks pretty narrow on google earth though.

ParticipantI would ride Braddock all the way to Columbia Pike, take the bike path on the Pike down the hill past Holmes Run and take Blair to Glen Carlyn to Manchester. Manchester takes you to Bluemont park, from there you can do Custis to Adam/Key/Vietch or you could do the Bluemont Junction to the Fairfax Dr bike lane. The latter would be about 9.5 miles from the Edsall/Backlick intersection.
Then again as an above average sized male I don’t have the same concerns about sketchy neighborhoods, but nothing on this route would concern me.

ParticipantFacebook friend just posted this.
“Heads up anyone taking the CCT this morning: the bridge over Mass Ave is closed because a transformer blew (the firefighter standing there helpfully advised that I turn around and not touch the fence). Take Little Falls Pkwy to Little Falls Trail and hop back on.”
