The turns are well worn in and easy to spot, there are a few straight sections between turns that are not so easy to follow. Leaves should not be an issue. The barriers are hidden in the bushes near the railroad bridge if you are so inclined.

Anyone know if there are plans to extend the army navy bike lanes further east? After blocking two of the three lanes as part of the Hayes St construction they clearly have proven that Army Navy drive could easily undergo a road diet.

I had a stage 5 clinger this morning on the W&OD. I normally dont mind, and he was nice when we stopped at the light, but I don’t like having a 17,000 lumen light projecting my shadow on the trail in front of me so I detoured around Shirlington and back to the trail.

They never, ever, ever announce their presence, and rarely are they grateful for the pull, but I have not had one overlap my wheel on trail either.

Good times were had. I wish I could say the same about the coffee, they are super nice at Best buns but they cannot make a cappuccino to save their life.

Kathy, we missed you this morning. Hope you are doing well.

The economic loss (from lost productivity and taxes) you incur by having everyone just stay home would be orders of magnitude greater than the costs of just clearing the roads. Not to mention the costs of greatly increased accident rates and loss of life/injuries from those accidents.

You honestly think that the state of Virginia stands to lose $55 million dollars in revenues due to snow annually if they do not clear the roads?

As far as accident rates. In my opinion they would go down if people didn’t have an expectation that the roads will be cleared and chose not to make the trip at all.

No it isn’t. It’s based on paying someone $60 an hour to drive a self-propelled snowblower that handles 83 tons per hour. The calculations involving hand-shoveling are to figure out how much snow is 83 tons.

    What about capital costs? Fuel?

83 tons per hour is the published capacity provided by the manufacturer, how often is that correct even under optimal conditions? Is that for the wet snow we get here, or for the nice light powder in the mountains?

(are there Arlington-specific sales taxes? I don’t think so, but maybe.)

    Yes. http://www.tax-rates.org/virginia/arlington_county_sales_tax

While I think you are greatly underestimating the cost of clearing the trails, you are also ignoring that many (most?) of the people to benefit from cleared trails are not cyclists, so you’re cost per users estimate may be fairly accurate.

My stance here is probably pretty unpopular. The County and State should be spending significantly less on snow removal for roads, and certainly not increasing the budget to clear trails. Get winter tires and chains for your car, studded tires for your bike, or just plan ahead and expect to be at home when it snows more than a couple inches.

    Oh what joy.

Oh there will be beer just keep on the quiet, red solo cups are crucial. Although there wont be near as much beer as last weekend where the keg was only asking for donations. We went through one full fat tire and 5 pony kegs of 3 stars peppercorn saison. Come find me at the NCVC tent and Ill make sure you get a beer.

Also in years past there has a been Saturday afternoon open course time for people to get in a pre-ride.

Landon and I are in. I am doing the 2pm 3/4 race. I might get lapped, but at least it wont be as cold.

We will be there early to watch you degenerates make fools out of yourselves. I will have beer hand-ups for the 21 and up, and maybe hot chocolate handups for the minors.

I seem to remember from my motorcycle days that this may not be the best idea ever. I seem to remember lots of high speed traffic and not much shoulder space.

Strava users would seem to agree with you. Looks like they think that Fleetwood Dr and Brent Town Rd along the west side of Quantico are better routes to the south.

EDIT: I just looked at the second link that Dismal posted. They took the route that talked about above. You might want to look at the cue sheet in that second link for some ideas on where to go further south.

When I approached Columbia Pike to cross this morning (going east) crews were doing construction work that dug up the entire entrance/exit to the street. I had to pick up my bike, put it on the street facing oncoming traffic just so I could be ready to cross when the light was red for traffic for me to safely cross.

I’m hoping it is done this evening!

When I came through around 0600 the west side of the intersection was covered in dirt/gravel. Luckily I was travelling rather slow since the light was red.

Yeah, but I can’t race in a cat 3/4 race anymore (I’m unlicensed = cat 5). So I don’t think there’s an option for an unlicensed/CAT-5 rider to race for 45 minutes anymore? (It’s odd that the CAT-4 folks are allowed to do the short-format race; they [CAT-3] wouldn’t have been able to in previous years.)

You are right that as a one-day license racer you only have the 4/5 as an option.

The majority of Cat 4 racers are newbies with a few cross races under their belt and are grandfathered into a Cat 4 because they have annual licenses. Anyone with more than 10 races would have likely moved up to Cat 3 under the old structure. There are a lot of road racers that did their first cross race at DCCX as a 4 because they have annual licenses. There just are not enough Cat 5 cyclocross racers to justify running a separate field for them. The real problem here is that the old guys don’t race their category and there is only so much time in a day, especially for our race (Ed Sander in 2 weeks) because it gets dark at 5:30, hence why we dont have the Rookie race that DCCX has.

Edit: I looked at the USAC Results for DCCX. in our 125 man field only 23 racers were Cat 5s.
