I’ve actually ridden all three, and there’s really no room for bikes on the Arland D. Williams Jr. Memorial Bridge – don’t try it without a chase vehicle. Rochambeau is okay but access is difficult, and the George Mason Memorial Bridge is no challenge with the path and all.
Impressive! But those are technically interstates, right? And aren’t self-propelled vehicles prohibited from interstates? Or is that not an ironclad rule?
Rochambeau has long leads that lead only to bigger and faster highways. At least Williams has a ramp right at river’s edge on the south.
Speaking of bridges, I’ve been wanting to try the new Wilson Bridge.

The chopper crew.
The other guy who jumped in the river (there were two; one of them was memorably caught live on camera by a WRC-TV crew on the scene).
Arland D Williams Jr.
Wow what a day… incredible people all.

ParticipantGlad to hear you’re ok. That is a nasty intersection with I Street traffic always pushing the 15th St light. Traffic there on 15th is light but Eye is crushing.

ParticipantThat’s cool. I’ll keep an eye out for him.

ParticipantYep, lottery. $6 to enter the lotto. No guarantee of entry, of course. The registration fee ($75) has not changed.
Groups of up to 4 can register, and they will be treated as one for the purposes of lottery.
As jrenaut said, you can glom on to a charity if you’re so inclined. Or you can pony up $200+ for VIP, which skips lottery and positions you at the starting line.
One important kicker: You have to pick up your rider packet in person in the several days before the ride. No mailouts.
Last year’s experience was such a disaster that I can only imagine this move was designed to hone the field down to under 30K.

You didn’t happen to run into a bunch of people giving away free bike lights to people who didn’t have them at the Custis/Mt. Vernon/Key Bridge back in December, did you?
There can’t be two of you out there? Can there?

Riley: I actually picked green because it’s the color your eye responds to fastest. You’ll almost sub-consciously see me before you actually SEE me see me. Make sense?Very cool. I like lights.
Wondering about green, though… awhile back, police vehicles switched to blue because it distinguishes them from other emergency vehicles, and the frequency is shorter than red (and green too). In low-light conditions when your eyes are responding to low-frequency wave lengths, it seems a high frequency input would prompt an even faster response. LEDs are effective for the same reason due to their light propagation properties. Looking at the flex-LED website, maybe I’ll order a few strings of greens and blues.

I don’t think Fairfax issues vehicle decals any more. They have other ways of getting you.
