While we’re fixing this intersection, at least hypothetically in our minds, can we do something about the utility pole and sign posts right there by the MVT turn-on? Everyone planning to cross there just seems to hover at the very junction those few of us going down the trail or coming off of it need. It’s not too bad now, but come summertime it’s literally a bottleneck.

Perhaps we could get a “Don’t Block the Box” sign and yellow stripes there? Though my idea of the sign to post would be “Don’t wait for the light there you idiot.”

This party crasher had to leave early but had a fun time reveling in BAFSers’ craziness. When leaving, I was impressed with the gaggle of fantastical bicycles locked up outside Cap City (and some folded up and taken inside).

When you do start checking out Kingstowne commuting routes, I’ll be looking for your recommendations. My son, who is also a contractor, just picked up a new assignment in Kingstowne. He lives in Del Ray and had bike commuted to Metro for his former, (cushy, it seemed to me) job in DC. I’d like to see him push himself to riding to his new Kingstowne job a few days a week.

It looks to me when you do get to the full commute, you may want to come up Commonwealth after you get across I-495. I wouldn’t take the Braddock Road route.

Years ago, when I first started commuting, I was apprehensive about being able to get to work. I rode 1/2 way to National Airport, thinking if I could make it there and back, I could make it all the way into work. Now it seems so simple and easy, though I have gotten slower and my commute takes longer because of that.

    Good luck getting going.

If I’m allowed to laugh at people who get up at Midnight to ride one mile just to get the 11 points for that day, I’ll be there. (How soon can I sign up for BAFS 2016?)

    1) Tie – Dkel and Rockford (aka Team DRock) – 15 each..

But all of Dkel’s photos were sideways. Surely there should be some points off for that.

My son would like to have this. Right now he leans his bike against a wall in this apartment and trips over it constantly. PM Sent.

Is that a current photo? The article says that the sign was blocking the pedestrian walk signal but it has been moved. In the photo, it looks like the walk signal is still blocked.

The sign has been moved to the left, no longer blocking the walk/don’t walk sign and without blocking the sidewalk/Custis Trail.

A motorist ignoring or not noticing the no turn on red sign cut me off yesterday.

I drove the IOD from the I-66 ramp recently. That no turn on red sign does not stand out very well. It is attached to the signal arm, in line with three signals what will be red when it is effective, has some red in its lights itself and the arm is up pretty high. I was looking for it and thought it blended in too much. Perhaps it should flash.

Thanks for reports, I’ll probably take MVT home tonight as a result of them.

While I was pleasantly surprised to find my Longbridge►Pentagon►Memorial Circle►110 trail►Rosslyn►Key Bridge route was virtually the same distance as MVT►Key Bridge, the four crossings of the GW Parkway have me longing for the MVT route. I too will go home that way tonight.

I was on the GW Parkway this afternoon and noticed the MVT south of Belle Haven looked pretty nasty still. Quite a few cyclist were walking sections.

I keep hearing that the issue for NPS is funding, not desire to clear trails. If Arlington came up with the money, or just said they’d do it, it seems like NPS would say go ahead.

I think funding is an excuse not a reason. You are much more involved and closer to the discussion than I am, but my impression from a few interactions with the GW Parkway management is that they are just not interested in clearing the MVT. They look forward to the 85% of the year when snow is not a problem and we just shut up about it already.
