3/1/21 – Pig or BBQ Joint

3/1/2021 — pig or BBQ joint. I stopped by Pork Barrel BBQ in Del Ray for scavenger-hunt and quaxing points, even though I actually prefer the other BBQ restaurant in this local restaurant group (Sweet Fire Donna’s). There’s a cute pig in Pork Barrel BBQ’s logo, although now that I think about it, the fact that the pig is holding a fork seems somewhat cannibalistic.

The pig outlasted the restaurant! The Dixie Pig Bar-B-Q restaurant closed in the late 1990s, but the sign survived. Now Vaso’s, a Greek restaurant occupies the space on Powhatan Street in Alexandria.

Mystery solved! I always wondered why this Greek restaurant had a BBQ sign. Now I know. Thanks, CaseyKane50!

2/28/2021 — “mattress” on a sign. Today would have been an unpleasant day for public sleeping! At the local Mattress Firm in Potomac Yard:

2/27/2021 — “black” or “white” on a sign. From a sign in Fort Ward: “It [March on Washington] was an awesome experience: thousands and thousands of people from all across the country, black and white, arms locked, standing together for freedom.”

2/26/2021 — acronym or initialism. In urbanist circles, opponents of development are often labeled as NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) or CAVEs (Citizen Against Virtually Everything). But the acronym that amuses me the most is BANANA (Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone).

2/24/2021 — “Charles and Diana” subanagram. A grim thought for a beautiful day, but here’s my bike at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. NCMEC is the nation’s clearinghouse and reporting center for issues related to the prevention of and recovery from child victimization.

2/23/21 – Mosaic (likeness or word)

2/23/2021 — mosaic. National Harbor has two cool mosaics by artist Cheryl Foster, celebrating notable people and species of the Chesapeake Bay. This part of the mosaic shows the commissioned admiral of the Chesapeake Bay, Carl White, holding a boat’s wheel, and a boatwright. But the mosaics also include a crab picker, a ship’s captain, crabs, and rockfish, pumpkinseed fish, bass, and yellow perch.

2/21/2021 — the word “peace” in any language. Here’s my bike visiting the mural “Education, Not Incarceration” at the Tenants and Workers United Building in Alexandria. The artist goes by MasPaz (“more peace” in Spanish), and my photo shows the part of the mural that has his signature. But the whole mural is very cool and worth a visit.

Nope, not too late! I have plenty of gaiters left. $10 each, payable in cash, PayPal, or Venmo. Free delivery within Arlington or Alexandria, or add a $1 if you want it mailed to you. Thanks.
