Fast Friendly Guy, Steve O, Karen B, kdugan, Powerful Pete — it was fun meeting you at the happy hour yesterday. Everyone else — I hope we get a chance to meet at another happy hour or team event.

It looks like some of the others are introducing themselves on their team threads, so here goes: I bike commute from OT Alexandria to downtown when I can, and on weekends I like to run errands by bike and fit in the occasional longer ride. I apologize in advance that I’ll be out of town without access to a bike for at least one weekend during FS, and that I don’t currently have studs, bar mitts, toe warmers, or other winter gear that would allow me to live up to Rule 5.

As I understand it, the things we need to do are:
    1.) Pick a captain.
    2.) Pick a team name.
3.) Create a Strava club for the team.
4.) Let the substitution czar — Amalitza? — know that Fast Friendly Guy plans to withdraw from BAFS2015, and that we’ll need a substitute. (Heal quickly, FFG!)

And just to be clear, by posting this I’m not volunteering to be team captain. I’m a triple newbie — new to winter commuting, new to FS, and new to Strava — so you really don’t want me to be team captain.

If we’re sticking with the “club” theme for our team name, that should lend itself to some creative possibilities. Club Sandwich? Club Penguin IRL? Club Who Needs Groucho Marx Anyway? I like Team Club Soda, too. Other suggestions welcome!

Quick question — I see in the thread comments that a few people have pledged “$0.XX per mile” but the crowdrise website only seems to allow you to donate a fixed amount. Am I doing something wrong, or will people just do the math at the end and make a donation then based on mileage as reported at the end of the game?

I was planning to donate based on reported miles at the end of FS. But if there’s a way to make incremental donations on Crowdrise as the points are accrued, I’d be happy to do that instead.

Another newbie chiming in. Hi, everyone!

I started bike commuting from OT Alexandria to Penn Quarter this past spring, and my commute quickly became one of the best parts of my day. I used to dread the windy days — until I started reading the jokes on the forum about putting up a sail and cruising home on the MVT. I used to think that I’d have to stop bike commuting once it got dark, for safety reasons — until I found the forum posts extolling the peacefulness of after-sunset rides and read the (extensive) forum posts about how to use bike lights properly. And now I’m hoping that the collective wisdom — or should that be the collective insanity? — of Freezing Saddles can teach me how to keep biking through the winter.

I’m looking forward to meeting everyone.

Komorebi, I love that you want to support Freezing Saddles and Feeding Saddles in some way! If you make a contribution to Feeding Saddles, I’ll add ten dollars to Mikey’s charity.

Thanks, Arlingtonrider! Your generous offer to match just inspired me to donate $25 to Mikey’s team. And I’ll donate another $0.05 per Freezing Saddle point earned by Mikey’s team, up to a total of $150.

Newbie here (although I’ve been lurking for a little while). I just wanted to say that this is a brilliant idea. I’m still on the fence about signing up for Freezing Saddles, mostly because (1) I’ve never biked in winter before, and (2) I’m a wimp when it comes to dealing with cold weather. But if I do sign up, this side bet will be a primary reason why. (And even if I don’t sign up, I’ll definitely be donating and cheering from the sidelines.)
