I’m planning to repurpose last year’s turtle costume and go as a Koopa Troopa. Depending on the weather, however, my costume might be “Koopa Troopa masquerading as a rain-suited cyclist.”

Maybe I put too much acid on my cheerios this morning, but did anyone else see an Orthodox priest jazzercising with a Roman cross in the Pennsylvania Avenue bike lanes at 9th Street?

It’s not just you. I saw him there last Friday, and I’ve occasionally seen him further east, around Penn and 4th. Does anyone know his story?

Thanks to all of the Rule 9 badasses who came out for today’s very wet ride. Someday I will lead an Asian food ride that doesn’t involve rain. Today was not that day. Thanks for keeping it fun, despite flooded trails, muddy cut-throughs, and squelchy shoes.

The route to Annandale was quite pleasant and low stress except for a crossing of Gallows.

For those encouraging more cyclists to use Fairfax County’s bike lanes: we rode the full length of the Annandale Rd. bike lanes between South St. and Masonville Dr., rode one block of the South St. bike lanes from Westover St. to Hillwood Ave., and saw the spray paint markings where the Gallows Rd. bike lanes will be installed between Columbia Pike and Annandale Rd. Once those bike lanes are done, I plan to rework my route to The Block to use more of the Gallows Rd. bike lanes and eliminate the stressful crossing that Judd mentioned.

Can you send me the live track too? I’m planning to come to the start but also nervously eyeing the forecast. And I might address it by riding my Jamis, which has wider tires & is slower…. And since I’m not Josh I wonder if I might not keep up…..

Sure, I’ll send you the Live Track. And you shouldn’t worry about keeping up. I’ll be riding my heavy commuter, so I won’t be racing up any hills.

My heart is all in, but I’m afraid I’m going to have to make a “game day decision” tomorrow morning about whether we can do the ride. Mr. Kitty has been sick for the last two days and within the last hour I’m starting to cough.

I hope that both you and Mr. Kitty feel better soon!

I am planning to come, and it looks like riding from the start will work for me, but I would like the livetrack anyway, because QOTM is interested in meeting us (not by bike sadly) in Annandale.

Sure. Should I send the LiveTrack to your email address, or would QOTM prefer to get the LiveTrack at a different email address?

Also, for anyone who is nervously eyeing Sunday’s weather forecast, I’m planning to go ahead with this ride unless it’s pouring out — and maybe even then. Bring your rain gear.

NovaEbike, regardless of whether you change your username or not, I hope you’ll continue to share your story when you feel so inclined. I lost my excess weight before I discovered the joys of biking, but weight maintenance continues to be a struggle every day. Biking helps with that — and so does hearing inspiring stories like yours. Good luck reaching your weight-loss goals. Even though we’ve never met, I’m cheering you on.

That was a fun ride. Thanks to Judd for instigating, and to josh, creadinger, and LeprosyStudyGroup for pulling me up those last few hills when my legs had turned into jelly.

I have to be out in Merrifield (Mosaic) Sunday morning. If I leave there around 11, I’m hoping I can find you and meet you at The Block, and ride back to the Eden Center and Shirlington with the group.

Let me know if you’d like to be added to my Garmin LiveTrack, which will send you an email with a link showing where we are in real time. Same offer goes for anyone who wants to meet us mid-ride. Just PM me your email address.

I would be up for doing some rides in FFX, particularly if it is to get food and then let the business know that we are so happy to have been able to use a bike lane to get there.

In that case, you should be sure to come to the Asian food ride planned for September 23. We’ll be using the new bike lanes on Annandale Rd. I’ve been trying to find a good way to bike to The Block ever since it opened, and the Annandale Rd. bike lanes made it much, much easier to get there.

I’m happy to plan other food-centric Fairfax rides if people have suggestions for particular bike lanes to use or destinations to visit.

Parking??? I’d have to drive to the start.. is there Street or lot parking anywhere

As Judd said, there’s no shortage of parking. See http://villageatshirlington.com/parking/ for driving directions and more info about the various garage and street parking options.

Ooo ooo! Let me see if I can talk Mr. Kitty into this. It might be a mileage stretch for him, but I think he can do it.

He should definitely come. We’ll be taking a lunch break, so it’s really a 12-mile ride followed by a 7-mile ride. Totally doable, right?

Thanks @Komorebi!! That’s so kind. Could I try your burrito bag tomorrow? I’ll probably still bring a pannier but I’d love to try that. See you in the morning!

    Thanks all for volunteering !

(and i’m sure hoping this achiness I’m feeling is not illness coming on :( ) I am really looking forward to the ride!

Sure, I’ll bring the burrito bag tomorrow morning. Just be aware that it’s only water resistant, not waterproof. You’ll probably want to bring some ziploc or plastic bags for your clothes and anything else you want to keep dry.

I hope the achiness goes away soon!

Question about bags for a ride like this-

I haven’t done many of these longer rides. I like to be prepared with food, a rain jacket, maybe a change of clothes (and I’m riding there). What bag do you all use for this?

These are the different options I use, depending on how much I need to carry:
    1. Jersey pockets
    2. Small bento box that sits on my top tube, can hold about two granola bars
    3. Burrito handlebar bag, can hold two full-size burritos (yes, I’ve tested this)
    4. Lightweight string backpack
    5. Small sling backpack
    6. Full-size backpack
    7. Panniers

I’m volunteering at the ride start and would be happy to bring items # 2-5 if you want to test them out for the day. Just let me know.

I usually do a hand wave behind my bike (as I learned from my revered teacher, Komorebi)

Haha, that’s a good one. I nearly snorted my coffee all over my keyboard.

To be clear, I do the hand wave only after I’ve used my helmet mirror to make sure that no else is trying to pass on the left. Especially on crowded trails like the MVT, I don’t trust the faster-moving cyclists to call their passes or be paying enough attention to notice my hand signal.
