Just in case you reschedule or actually do go on Friday — there’s a missing cue on your route. As you leave Meadowlark Gardens turning right on Beulah, there’s no cue for taking the next right on Meadowlark Road. (The reason I noticed it is that I’ve ridden this fairly often and wanted to make sure you direct people onto the road, and not the connector trail until the very end of the road where it connects to the W&OD. As the connector trail goes down the side of Meadowlark Rd it’s pretty steep in places and it’s not overly wide. At night, it could lead to a bad outcome.) In sum: add the cue to turn right on Meadowlark Road so no one accidentally gets on the trail thinking it’s safer. Hope the weather clears enough for you to do it!
Thanks! I fixed that in RWGPS. The map was correct but the cue was missing, for some reason. And yes, I rode the connector trail when I was scouting this route and decided that the road was definitely the way to go at night, given how narrow, steep, and curvy the trail is. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the weather is going to cooperate for Friday.

Ugh it’s still 2020 isn’t it?
Yes, that explains everything.
On the plus side, I now have a bunch of extra gaiters with the wrong year and number of days. If you want one, let me know.

ParticipantThe forecast is looking ugly for Friday, so I’ll probably end up cancelling this ride. Forty miles + walking around in cold rain is too much Rule 9 for me, sorry! I’ll wait to make a final call until closer to the day, just in case the forecast improves.

ParticipantThe company printed the wrong logo on the neck gaiters , and the gaiters are being reprinted now. Hopefully they’ll arrive soon!

ParticipantThanks for organizing, Sarah B! I’m planning to be there for at least the first part of the ride.

ParticipantYou are awesome, dbb! I just donated. But I must say it’s a little confusing that the WABA “donate” page redirects to the “join” page. What if someone just wants to donate without becoming a member?

ParticipantI should add: if you’re planning to join the ride, please post on the thread or let me know privately. If more than ten people want to join, I may try to organize a second wave, with a slightly earlier or later start time. Thanks.

ParticipantNeck gaiters won by a landslide (64.5% of the people who voted in the poll, plus several votes in the thread), so neck gaiters it is! I’ll post about ordering and shipping details once I have them.

Great idea for a PP, SarahBee! I’m planning to organize a group ride to Meadowlark’s Winter Walk of Lights on January 1, since it sounds great and I’ve never been. Stay tuned for more details.

ParticipantI’m planning a community ride in Alexandria to see Halloween decorations. Details TBD, but we’ll finish in plenty of time for people to bike over to accordioneur’s gig.

Congratulations, Komo!!! Your bank account will be happy, too.
Hopefully you kept your bike rack. Some people find it slightly bemusing that I own a bike rack but don’t own a car to put it on. However, it’s handy for when one rents or borrows a car.Yes, I estimate that I’ve already saved close to $500 from the refund for my car insurance, not having to pay the personal property tax, not having to get my state inspection done, and not having to buy a new battery or do the other repairs that were probably needed. And yes, I kept my bike rack for future car rentals.

ParticipantCongrats on the five years, Steve! You and the others who have gone car-free inspired me to do the same. This was the scene last Thursday:

I’ve used my car exactly once in 2020, to bring my office plant home when I started working from home in mid-March. I figured the car wasn’t doing me or anyone else any good sitting in the garage, so I donated it.
Hopefully, five years from now, I’ll be able to report that I’m still blissfully car-free.
