I’ve seen the orange and green bikes in Pentagon City and a couple of orange bikes in Shirlington which I presume is outside of the approved zone. If they circulate a lot I think they are a good addition to the scene, but most of the ones I’ve seen seem to sit for 24+ hours, often on the sidewalk or some out of the way place making them look like abandoned bikes to the casual observer. Given how careless people are with Cabi bikes, I don’t have much faith the dockless bikes will stay in good shape or not wind up in the river or other places they don’t belong.

Sorry to hear that your friend was injured.

In the event of a driver doing something that causes a crash:
    1. Always call 911. The adrenaline rush from being hit can cover up injuries and impact judgment. If 911 asks if you are injured, tell them that you are unsure and that they should dispatch a paramedic.
    2. Insist that the driver be ticketed even if you don’t think that you’re hurt. This can greatly impact your ability to cover damages should you find out the next day you are injured or something is broken on your bike.

This is what Bruce Deming always advocates. Unfortunately the police may or may not (usually the latter) not ticket the driver.

Damn, sorry I missed the send-off. Am still in contractor/home moving madness. Best wishes on your new adventures. The area is amazing out there and I’m sure you will enjoy it. Especially the non-humid summers. Great places to go hiking and biking.

Thanks for all of the contributions you have made to the area’s biking community. We really appreciate it.

I’ve been noticing a TON of gnats south of the airport over the last few weeks. I’ve started making sure my mouth is always closed in some sections because it’s just a curtain of gnats in a few spots, especially around Washington Marina and Belle Haven park. I’m pretty sure I’ve swallowed a bucket full already this year. On a positive note, the dragonfly population is down though, since biking into them was getting a little painful earlier this summer. Ick.

I’ve often wondered why the MVT isn’t swarming with bats since they could have their easy fill of food. I’m all for installing bat boxes along the trail to cut down on the bug population.

Just curious on this one. Well, the guy that will do the bike fitting is a former US olympian, so I assume he is earning adequately. I think it will be insulting on his part If I give him some change.

    What you think?

I know who you are talking about (he did my fitting). No reason to tip. He basically works as an independent contractor and sets his own rates. He is always busy (does great fittings too).

Wow, ouch. The MVT scores another victim. Another reminder to everyone to be extra vigilant when the conditions are out of the ordinary.

I would highly advise seeking another doctor’s opinion; surgeons are, understandably, cut happy and it seems odd that you would need screws for a hairline fracture. Heck, I’ve broken my ankle and healed perfect without any surgery and only a walking cast. Seems strange but I’m not a doctor but I play one on the internet.

Healing from injury sucks, no way around it. Hopefully your wife has the fortitude to take care of you with good grace and humor.

    Best wishes.

Yes, lots of thefts at the Ballston metro bike racks. Amazing given the ped traffic around there. Also, there has been an on-going problem of bike thefts in general along the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor so I wouldn’t lock up a really nice bike for long periods of time there, even in a garage. Is there anyway you could bring the bike into your building? You may want to ask your potential employer; just explain that you are a bike commuter and are looking at your options. Hotels often have unadvertised gym memberships available; they build gyms in order to attract guests but no one ever uses them so they give out memberships to the locals.

The answer is always: From laying down amazing wattage.

I think it most likely occurred when I unintentionally went on a mountain biking excursion on my road bike and had to bushwhack my way out, uphill, to find civilization. Was a funny experience *after* it was over.

It’s about the size of a nickel on the inside of the leg. No idea how it got there.

I do occasionally cheat and throw kit in on the delicate cycle but I live in a high rise and it costs money to use the dryers.

Well, it’s designed for wetsuits which I presume are not designed to go into the dryer. I hang dry my shorts anyway so shouldn’t be an issue.

Oh wow! Thanks for the reply since I had no idea IronMend existed. Even though it is made specifically for wetsuits it appears that most people on Amazon use it to repair cycling kit. Sounds like there is a real need out there for the cycling community. Will get some and give it a whirl. May be useful for some other stuff with holes in it.
