Gainesville showed 13 new riders (they went from 398 to 411) and surged with about 89,000 points in three days. The WAAS went from a lead of about 49,000 points to a deficit of 23,689.
As Rod said a while back, it is easier to recruit someone that rides 100 miles a week than to ride an additional 100 miles a week.
Time to do some more recruiting!
Fear not! I met more than a few folks at Tour de Frederick on the century who were riding for WAAS on Saturday, so that’s a nice little boost. As we rode up a hill (early in, before mile 10) I issued the rallying cry “ONWARD! EACH MILE LEADS TO GAINESVILLE’s DEFEAT!”

I DID IT!!! 😎
Thank you to everyone for your advice, it really helped! I went into it both super-excited, and a little nervous, but it was a fantastic experience. The weather was great starting out (though it got really really hot in the afternoon) and the volunteers incredibly friendly. I managed to finish in 8.5 hours. Not the first by any means, but not the last, and better than I was expecting.

ParticipantThanks for posting the pics and the recap! It looks like a blast. I hope I can join the next one!

ParticipantSorry Pete!!! Things got busy at the end of last week so I didn’t get a chance to catch the forums before I left. I was at Tour de Frederick and rode the century.
If you saw a girl on a cross-bike in a Bike Arlington jersey, that was me.
If nothing else maybe we can swap stories if you’ll be at Thursday’s Happy Hour

ParticipantI’ve been looking forward to this so much I made sure my Office Outlook Calendar had a “registration day” entry! I’m in like flint~

It seems it is about time to register for this – I have never done it (or really much in the way of organized group rides at all, aside from Port City short rides, the Tour de Fat ride, and the FSHH convoy) and I think I would do the 13 colonies.
50 States/13 Colonies is one of the most fun, uniquely DC experiences you can have on a bike! But I’m going to warn you, its a “Gateway Drug.”
I did 13 Colonies two years ago and had such a good time! I’d never ridden with others before and it was a rolling conversation! I spend some time riding next to one fellow who was born and raised in the city and pointed out schools he went to, changing neighborhood landmarks and so on. Then I ended up with another group of transplants and got to learn their stories. I had such a blast I didn’t want it to end, so, I decided to make 50 States my goal last year.
So I worked up mileage on my little (and by “little” it really weighed a comparative-ton) 7 speed speed commuter hybrid throughout the summer and managed to complete 50 States despite the rain and hauling a wet bag of dry clothing (for the afterparty!) in decent time. That day I did 72 miles and it was the longest day of riding I’d had.
It was from that experience I’m now about to do my first century this weekend. So If you haven’t signed up yet, I say go for it! Just be careful, it just might lead you places… 😎

ParticipantYeah! If there’s another before it gets frosty, count me in! This time of year into the fall it can be so pleasant to ride at night. If I’m in a group no one can give me grief about it. 😮

ParticipantI just want to go on record saying I love waking up to Morning Edition on NPR and hearing Martin Decairo routinely report on cycling issues. He’s a Transportation Reporter who really covers all modes!
I also smile anytime they interview or quote someone from WABA. It feels like my donation dollars at work–for both orgs!

ParticipantHoly Cow! I sure hope there isn’t a blooper reel somewhere of these guys crashing and getting hurt making those vids. It’s more fun to imagine that there was no editing and everything was perfect.
I’m glad you guys brought up the injuries. This is the first time I’ve seen trick vids like this and its good to have a reality check on the risks…
That said, I like knowing what my crossbike could be capable of in the hands of a pro!
Kitty
ParticipantAwww MAN! That sounds like a blast, but I’m going to be in Frederick that night for the century ride the next day. 😡 Damn! Any other weekend but that one…

Hi, I’m working on my masters in systems engineering and as part of the degree I have to design a bike safety system. I’d like some community feedback on some of the capabilities and design specifics of the system. I’d appreciate your help in completing this 2-3 min (11 question) survey.

ParticipantOnce they get settled and sorted, we should organize a ride to check them out!
Kitty
ParticipantSo long as nothing happens to with my legs or wheels in Tour de Fredrick this weekend, I’ll be there! Hopefully I’ll be in a position to celebrate!

Come on, no takers? We’ve got three spare beds.
Would that I could! Sounds like quite the experience!

ParticipantI not only participated, I ended up being a ride marshal! It was a tremendous event. (My own foreign policy proclivities aside). Seeing the support of the DCPD was really something. I’ve never been in a ride where we had our own motorcade! It really allowed folks of all cycling levels to take part and go at their own pace, and focus on the message of peace. Totally inspiring!

ParticipantWoo-hoo! It was really exciting to see the posting for the month come up! I already enjoyed seeing the monthly breakdown, but now that I’m part of the Gainesville chase its even better! One thing I am a bit bummed about is how far Arlington has dropped back in the community ranks (for cities over 200,000 of course)
Personally, I finished out the month on a high note. I ended up riding every day in July and with the weekend century training put up my most points in a month. While technically in August, my Saturday ride pushed me over the total number of miles I put up for all of the 2014 NBC! 😮
