ParticipantAs mentioned in today’s WaPo “Gadgets of 2020” article….does anyone have any experience with the Van Moof bikes? They have some interesting features, and just saying the name makes me happy.

ParticipantYes, got to Audubon, was staying down in that area (near Williams Plum St Snowballs!) for a couple of days. Brought my wife down so she can care for her family while working remotely for a few months. I’ll be back in mid-November and will explore more extensively – lots to see. Great way to really *see* the different parts of any city.

ParticipantI am not named Chris, yet I too feel this is a worthy cause.

ParticipantInteresting growth in bikey stuff in the city, though the distribution is irregular and of course the road qualities “vary some”, shall we say. Still, some real positives here as long as you watch where you are going. Bikelife in NOLA would be improved with some enhanced wayfinding signage. And biking in a new city does wonders for one’s appreciation of the infra in ARL and the DMV.

ParticipantFour Mile Run Trail where it passes under one of the Glebes (W. Glebe, specifically) to the east of 395 is a bit of pond after last night’s downpour. I bet the drain(s) are clogged; there previously was a lot of debris in that area in recent days. A personal flotation device may be advised. Or blow through the pond going fast and get a free shower.

ParticipantNot sure about your specific case (and I am glad you were not *in* the helmet at the time of the “crash”!), but helmets are designed to absorb energy to protect the wearer, and sometimes that means the helmet deforms (breaks) as a result. It gives its life to save yours, so to speak. I have had a couple of would-be noggin busters where the helmet was the worse for wear (and my noggin faired ok, more or less). Those helmets were toast!
OTOH, some plastics sometimes don’t do well with repeated exposures to sunshine. Sweat does not help, either, so perhaps the plastic simply aged earlier than expected.
You could follow up with Specialized to see what they say – maybe there’s some amount of warranty coverage still in play. But regardless, you have bumped up your visibility quotient considerably now!

ParticipantNot sure about the FDR bridge (!) but the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge is open for all. Same with Memorial and 14th. Distancing can be tough (esp. on Roosevelt Bridge) on weekends but on a weekday it should be better.

ParticipantMemorial Bridge & Lincoln Memorial were fine a couple of days ago and 14th St Bridge was on point today.

ParticipantAsked and answered:
There are a few beneficiaries of the ride:
1. 50% of profits from the event goes to The Gates Philanthropy Partners for Covid 19 Relief
2. Each of our cycling charities that we work with throughout the year – can be found on each event page within the website – will receive $5 per person they have sign up. Its an incentive program to help boost the event.
3. We partnered with Autism Speaks and riders are making accounts on their website and 100% of the funds raised there go to Autism Speaks for Autism Awareness month. In addition, the breweries in a way are beneficiaries since we are going to bring them a lot of business when the tap rooms re open. Essentially we are buying everyone on the ride 2 beers at their favorite brewery listed.
I hope that helps!
Please let me know if you have any questions

ParticipantThe concept is pretty wonderful. However, none of the breweries are truly local, and I wonder how much of the registration fee really goes to help anyone. I hope enough to matter. Still, this can be *another* reason to go for a ride…
