To those of you who passed through the Custis/Ballston Connector intersection this morning, thanks for stopping by or waving!
LizI’m covering the same spot today 4-6pm. Wave as you pass or come say hi.

ParticipantSaw this great improvement while walking the dogs today. Happy making. Will bollards go the way of the dodo, at least in Arlington? One may dream….

And as far as passing little kids goes, I slow way down and talk them through it — “Keep going straight just like you are. I’m going to pass you.” Then “Great job!” if they hold their line. The smiles they give after that are definitely worth the slowing down.
Easier still – have a stash of chocolates handy, and toss them away from the trail while alerting the kids to their presence…

ParticipantI’ve enjoyed a couple broken spokes before and managed to make it home each time, once @ 20 miles out on the W&OD. Dunno if that was smart on my part, but the spoke was on my front wheel, and the resulting wobble was not too bad overall so I felt ok about limping home.
My guess is that a broken spoke on a rear wheel (bearing more weight) might be dicier.

We talked about it on this thread (along with before/after pics). That said, I’m always happy to see unused collars get removed.

Participant“I started bike commuting because…” — I started biking to work as a solution for the “my knee is close to shot, what else can I do to stay in shape” issue. A co-worker at the time biked occasionally, and a Bike To Work day motivated me to go for it. Had to pretty much make my own support systems in terms of parking, changing areas, etc. but my boss was cool with it. At first I promised myself I would not get silly and spend a lot of $$ on bikes and gear and such, but as my mileage increased over time my resolve to stay cheap eroded some. I still pride myself on my relatively inexpensive bikes, but I have to resist the temptation of shiny goodies from time to time….
I’ve gotten my wife to also consider biking to work as a viable option, and schedule permitting she too is on 2 wheels when commuting. We both favor bikes when doing simple errands, too. Loved the looks I got when I rode to the garden plot my wife works on with a chain saw hanging off the back of the bike…

ParticipantThe commute settings functionality seems to work now – at least it did for me this morning. Give it a shot.

ParticipantReviving this thread to seek recommendations for shoes, specifically shoes for wide-footed sorts like me. Any brands reliably comfy for wide feet?
