That underpass under the Beltway off of Oakwood is do-able, but I’d try it during daylight hours at first. It’s a little sketchy, and rough riding in a couple of spots. Good luck!

If I read the post correctly, all those photos are current conditions. I think the post is pointing out that people salmon now anyways, since nearby alternatives aren’t as safe.

    But I could be misinterpreting!

Ha ha! I laughed out loud at this one. Have experienced it a few times, thankfully never too close.

I-66 is probably the only road in the world that does not operate at capacity during rush hour, but is at capacity at all other times.

How would you measure capacity – vehicles per lane per hour? Or passengers per lane per hour? I’d argue the latter measure is superior.

In fact, HOV restrictions may actually cause roads to move more people, not less. Say that during rush hour, vehicle volumes drop by 25%, but every vehicle is carrying twice as many passengers – the road’s performance has improved.

(I have no idea if this is true on I-66, I just want to point out the difference between measuring cars and measuring people).

    Interesting thread!

I’m wondering the same thing. Have been pondering a pair of Pearlizumi pants but they’re not cheap. Looking forward to the forum’s advice…!

The button seems to be working now, hoorah! I rode southeast-bound through this section on Sunday night and then again yesterday (Monday) midday – worked both times.

Here’s another idea. Not necessarily for CaBi specifically though might work. http://t.co/bdmDh5yv

Yeah, the actuator was still non-functional for me too at about 7pm tonight (on the northwest corner or the intersection). People were just going against the “red hand” once Columbia Pike traffic stopped.

In recent weeks I’ve taken a few trips in the 5-7 hour range with my iPhone running RunMeter, snapping a few pictures, etc., and I typically still have a quarter to half the battery left. I’m sure it wouldn’t last 14, but then again neither would I!! :)

I rode this again both detours tonight, and I think the cyclocross challenge on the grass up to RI is the lesser of the two evils – slightly preferable to the potholes and mud on 41st Pl, even in the rain. The grass path is almost starting to wear down to a dirt singletrack now.

Also, the traffic light at W@OD and Columbia Pike was not working today. Everyone was waiting for awhile and then just eventually crossed at their own risk when a gap in traffic appeared.

Yeah, I rode by this tonight. Looks like the trail pavement is being re-done? The small footbridge is blocked off with orange plastic fencing. The detour on 41st is not terribly well paved and a little rough going (potholes and mud, bring thick tires), but does enable crossing Rhode Island Ave with traffic. Alternatively, I saw folks riding on the grass up to RI Ave.
