Congratulations! That is not an easy commute, especially to start in the winter – well done! You should DEFinitely treat yourself. And with more sunlight and eventually warmer temperatures in the spring, it only gets easier from here!

Just in case, as a fallback (bad weather, tired out, etc), the bike racks on Metrobus can be an option – the REX line runs from Ft. Belvoir up to Old Town Alexandria.

But in any case, congrats again on a impressive commute!

I highly recommend the stretch from Lovettsville to Purcellville on this route – Mountain Rd. is incredibly scenic!

The New York situation continues to amaze. @BrooklynSpoke clocked 35 bikes/minute over the Manhattan bridge this morning, claiming anecdotally it was way more than previously experienced. Back of the envelope – this works out to something like 2,000 plus bikes per hour, which kind of blows my mind. Anyone know how much higher is this than normal? 2000 bikes/hr is like ten times the volume on the Custis at the top of the Rosslyn hill, and about the maximum vehicle throughput on a lane of interstate highway.

As a data and bike nerd, I find this kind of thing fascinating :)

The way I see it, I should be able to buy a new bike with all the money I saved 😎

I am a full subscriber to this way of thinking! So the more I ride, the more money I can put towards a new bike…. right?!?!?! :D

I used to commute from DC to Clarendon; thankfully there are many good options, basically depending on which bridge you choose. One consideration is to have a good light if you ever do southbound on the MVT in the dark, since you’re looking into headlights.

Via Memorial Bridge Pros: very scenic! Cons: crossing the GW Parkway, pedestrians on the Mall.

Via Key Bridge. Pros: using the L and 15th St cycletracks in DC. Cons: M St. in Georgetown. L St. cycletracks might have “growing pains” the first few months.

Via the 14th St. Bridge. Pros: Mostly trails the whole way, least amount of stopping, safe. Cons: Longer. This was my first choice.

Via the TR Bridge: see DismalScientist’s excellent response above. Pros: fairly direct, uses Penn cycletrack in DC. Cons: narrow path on bridge, stoplights in Foggy Bottom.

If you normally take Metro part-way, or use Metro as a backup plan for your ride – Metro has just announced a suspension of all service, bus and rail, for Monday, due to forecasted high wind speeds and anticipated power outages. Restoration time TBD.

Be super super careful if you do ride tomorrow, especially with the high winds. Stay-to-date with the latest on Metro here: wmata.com/sandy

I also like Marc’s Eye St. SW route, especially coming back to the DC side – except when there are home Nationals games. Independence is the fastest, but trafficky.

Here’s another one I like to avoid traffic: http://goo.gl/maps/ob7yi

Sighted ArlingtonRider last night on the 14th St. Bridge as I headed back into DC. Hopefully I covered my front light in time to keep it from blinding too much!

What a blast! A well-run, huge ride. Heck, you don’t even need a cue sheet, and the tailwinds were amazing.

    Oh, and PIE!

I’m signed up for the first time this year – doing the Assateague route.

Jabberwocky – when you say slower riders, how slow do you mean? We are thinking of starting not too early, but we’re probably more medium-speed…

Megabath – Pie, you say? Hmmm…. now I am seriously intrigued…!

    Looking forward to it.

Nice to meet the famed “dbb” as we cruised down Alabama Ave SE today!

It was a great ride – a grand adventure in our own backyard. many thanks to WABA and everyone for making it a success.

Very cool – I’d also add the Anacostia Riverwalk trail(s), and the Met Branch trail. And Marvin Gaye.

Is DC really the #4 “state”? Cool…
