ParticipantN=1 – A ride on Maxwell, a 2016 Trek Crossrip and my regular commuter. This picture is after attending a trivia night at the National Portrait Gallery where I met a few WABA women bikers who gave me a sticker that I put on my fork.

ParticipantMarch 19th is also my 36th birthday. I will be celebrating it at Hains Point. Bring cake and presents!

ParticipantI’m a first year participant and like how “the game” is structured. I rode zero miles in the winter last year. I’ve ridden 660 this winter. I now think 40 degree weather is “pretty nice” for a bike ride.
I’ve met some awesome people like Tim Vandish and Teresa Armundson who are two of the nicest people I’ve ever met; Ian Fingerman who changed my life as I was wallflowering at the initial happy hour by telling me that all you have to do is talk about bikes; Cynthia Palmer who is the cutest person that I have ever met; Sara Lappano, who will never do more Hains Point laps than me; and Mary Gersemalina who takes the best pictures on her rides.
Although I’m motivated by points and data, I don’t really care that my team isn’t going to win the overall points. There is enough data available that you can pick something else to win. My team is currently “winning” Hains Point laps. I’ll consider us victorious as long as we do more than Team 3 this year.
I think the system works the right way and is simple. Riding a mile is good. Riding more than a mile is extra good.
As far as side bets and pointless prizes, I haven’t really participated other than a little Beerneuring. Some of them are so complicated that my eyes glaze over after the first few sentences.
In sum, pipe down old timers, the new kids still find it fun and are happy to meet you especially since many of us lurked on the boards and on Strava before joining Freezing Saddles this year and at least in my case might consider you to be a biking idol.

ParticipantI’m in Newnan, Georgia this week for work but managed to find a rental bike and think I’ll be able to put in about 140 miles this week. My personal goal is for our team to have the most Hains Point laps. Thanks to Ian, Chris and LeprosyStudyGroup for putting in regular laps there. I’ll be there this weekend to do at least 10 laps to make up for the missed commute this week.
I highly recommend Friday coffee club. Great group of people there. I missed last Friday due to travel and will miss this Friday due to travel too but I’m looking forward to making it next week.

ParticipantI usually see about a four to eight hour delay from when I upload a picture on Strava and when it appears in the photos on Freezing Saddles. It appears that there’s a little bit of a lag for the people I follow too. Not complaining, just observing.

45mph wind gusts tomorrow.
Yeah… Hains Point is not likely to happen for me tomorrow. Weather Underground says sustained 25 mph winds from the NW. Maybe I’ll do laps where I pedal 6 miles per hour into the wind on the backside.

ParticipantBah! The work will be there tomorrow. But beer, there’s limited opportunities for beer in life.

ParticipantI vote to disqualify all laps from Team 3 that are only gate to gate and not full laps. The honorable Team 13 never skips out on completing the lap by riding down Buckeye.
Judd
ParticipantNow if only we can find a way to cheat by cutting through the golf course.

ParticipantHey hozn,
What Strava segment is used to determine whether a Hains Point lap is completed on the leaderboards? Team 13 and Team 3 are battling it out for most HP laps. We think it might be the Gate to Gate segment, but we’re not sure. There’s lots of places that one can start and finish a lap at HP and we want to make sure that we’re not losing laps by starting or finishing in the wrong place.
Thans for the help!

where is this thing tonight? if I can work it into my route home I’d stop by and grab something strong (beer not glutes)
edit: also wanted to ask this other question: where does a Haines Point lap start and end? Does it start at the northern stop/right turn from buckeye onto ohio? If it does, does that mean you have to go up buckeye a second time to complete the lap, or can you just head straight out? Or does it start where the divided ohio dr merges with itself and go all the way around? Does it start and end at the stops and ignore buckeye drive altogether, not completing the loop? I just don’t want to be going up there and doing like 90% of a lap and not complete a loop that counts, because I decide to turn left instead of right at the end, if you know what I mean.
I’ve wondered the same thing. It appears to me from monitoring the leaderboards that it’s the Gate to Gate segment. I’m going to pop over into the tech thread and ask hozn.

ParticipantTeam,
It’s late notice, but I’ll be attempting the first joint Team 3 – Team 13 Happy Hour tomorrow night.
I will be going to Gordon Biersch (900 F St NW, Washington, DC 20004) on Thursday, February 11th at 6 p.m. for the first crack at a Team 3/13 joint happy hour. My intention is to sit in the bar area. For those of you who I haven’t met, I’ll be the tall guy in bike gear that looks like a lumberjack. I’ve invited Team 3 who seem to be a rowdy drinking bunch. Please also feel free to invite any other friends of the 3/13 alliance, that may have the misfortune of being on an inferior BAFS team. You may not be aware, but Team 3 are our bitter rivals in the quest for the title of most Hains Points laps, which we currently lead.
I hope to see some of you out there,

I should be able to make a Thursday HH in DC or VA. Where are you thinking?
Sticking with the fine Team 3 tradition of going to a brewpub, I will be going to Gordon Biersch (900 F St NW, Washington, DC 20004) on Thursday, February 11th at 6 p.m. for the first crack at a Team 3/13 joint happy hour. My intention is to sit in the bar area. I’ll be the tall guy in bike gear that looks like a lumberjack. I’ll be inviting all of Team 13, but I’m not sure who will come out. Please also feel free to invite any other friends of the 3/13 alliance, that may have the misfortune of being on an inferior BAFS team.
Hope to see you guys tomorrow,

ParticipantI bought a Showers Pass softshell at Performance Cycles in Bailey’s Crossroads. They had a decent selection IMO, much better than REI, at least. I bought this one: https://www.showerspass.com/products/skyline-softshell
It’s 180 bucks at Performance. Looks like it’s currently on sale if you buy direct from the web. It’s really thin, but I’ve been comfy with a long sleeve thermal and this jacket down to 17 degrees. It “breathes” pretty well to if the amount of moisture on my cell phone in the back pocket is any indication. It’s a racing cut, so I had to go up a size. Nice zipper side vents and a vent at the neck if you start sweating too much. I’ve worn it in the rain several times and it works great for keeping the rain out. I’ve got short arms for my height and the sleeves are slightly long. The only thing that I don’t like about it are that the back pockets are a little bit too high for me to comfortably dig into while I’m wearing it. This may be the short arm problem plus a lack of flexibility though.
