ParticipantIf you haven’t sent a note to your Senator or Delegate yet, it’s still needed. The Senate bill will likely be voted on by the full Senate on Wednesday. The House version of the bill made it out of subcomittee by an 8-2 vote and goes to the full Transportation committee this week. If it makes it through the Transportation Committee and will go to the full House for a vote.

Thanks for posting.
I think I might be more excited about the notion of riding two abreast than the long awaited Idaho Stop. Sure would be nice for errands with kids if we didn’t have to go single file!
One of the arguments made by the Virginia Bicycling Federation was it legalizes parents protecting their kids by riding side by side.

ParticipantThe Bicyclist Safety Act has made it out of Senate Committee. It needs your immediate help to get passed by the full Senate this week and also to get it passed through the House committee.

The Friends of the Mt. Vernon Trail held an invasive vine removal event today that was extremely well attended.
I went, along with more than 40 other volunteers.

Final count was 49 volunteers which included someone who was riding by and asked if he could help.
The Friends of Mount Vernon Trail has weekly volunteer opportunities which are posted at mountvernontrail.org/events
Don’t let Steve O bogart all the knowledge on what multiflora rose and Japanese honeysuckle look like.

Checking in at 228.4 this week so down 1.8 pounds. I’ve been using MyFitnessPal and walking a lot more.

ParticipantThat bike was there at least two years ago when I first bikes to take a flight. There’s a couple of other bikes that were abandoned the last time I was there. It’s something I’d like to eventually work on addressing along with getting some upgrades to the bike parking and signage at the airport.

ParticipantAppreciate any other thoughts from folks. I often have the opportunity to provide feedback to NPS about trail related things.
I went out and biked it and also sat and observed each crossing for a few minutes.
A few thoughts:
1. Traffic was much slower.
2. Drivers stopped much more often even when approaching the crosswalk.
3. Lots of drivers stopped at the white line before the crosswalk.
4. Agree with the comment that the buttons for the RRFBs are too far away from the trail. The one mentioned is probably not accessible to a wheel chair user and is too awkward for someone on bike to hit and be able to quickly cross.
5. The button for half the RRFBs are on the wrong side of the trail. A user has to cross to the left side of the trail to hit the button and the cross diagonally in the crosswalk to return to the correct side of the trail.
6. The RRFB lights are not visible to the trail user after hitting the button so it’s impossible to know if they’re actually activated.
7. The north crossing where drivers are coming off Memorial Bridge is still scary. Driver stoping compliance is still very very low although they are moving a bit slower.A few pictures:

I estimate that the flexposts’ life expectancy is about three weeks max until drivers mow them down, but it was a nice thought.
Indeed. One flex post down a week after installation at the crossover to the trail to the Pentagon.

ParticipantThere’s some persistent ice spots in the Mount Vernon Trail any time the temperature approaches freezing. There are 2 big ones just south of Memorial Bridge. There is also one just north of Memorial Bridge.
The Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail were able to fix 3 places with standing water and ice sheets this month. We are continuing work in January to try to fix the rest as much as possible. There’s a significant water seep south of Memorial Bridge that keeps the trail surface constantly wet.

Rode the MVT this afternoon. The areas between the Trollheim and the Memorial Bridge tunnel had some pretty thick ice at the normal water seepage locations. Lot of tracks in the grass alongside the trail.
I’ve got three events scheduled for January to try to fix this the best we can that need volunteers. From just a cursory inspection, I think some of the puddles can be alleviated by removing some of the silt and turf that’s built up on the trail edge but some of it may require creating some channels for the water. I should have a better idea after getting the opportunity to look deeper during the January 2nd event. The water seepage is a challenge that I’m not sure I’ll be able to do anything about.
