Agree. I’d rather have lung damage than live my life based on a weather report.

ParticipantNot sure the best way to get in from Arlington, but I would take PA Ave to 4th SW. Left on I St SW, right on Half St SE, and you’ll hit the stadium. I’ve never been on the street around game time, though – I don’t know what traffic might be like.

I wasn’t trolling. I was just stating my opinion. Groupthink isn’t very helpful either is it?
I wasn’t calling out anyone in particular, I was just noticing that the general tone of conversation today has sometimes been less pleasant than it usually is. I was hoping to head that off and keep this a nice place to talk about bikes and biking.

ParticipantIt hasn’t been bad, but I’ve been on a forum that was once useful and degenerated into All Troll, All the Time, and it was sad. This forum is nowhere near that, but sometimes people still need to remember that we’re all awesome here.

ParticipantMy GPS told me I hit 58mph in Rock Creek Park the other day. I think it was uphill. GPS never lies, right?

ParticipantI can testify from personal experience that Bikeshare tires are not as wide as they sometimes need to be. I got caught in one of whatever those grooves are on 9th NW around L (Mt Vernon Sq) and went down back in December or something. It was especially embarrassing because it was a bit icy that day, and the construction workers thought I slid on ice. So, not only was my skill on a bike questioned (probably unavoidable after a fall), but also my judgement, which was not fair in this case. I did fine avoiding all the ice.

ParticipantI thought about saying something when WE ALL STOPPED TOGETHER AT THE NEXT LIGHT, but decided not to. The one time I confronted a cyclist for being an ass (blowing through a crosswalk against the light and nearly hitting me while I was carrying my daughter), he just gave me a look like he’d just stepped in dog crap or something.
It just makes me want to make sure I do a better job of calling my own passes – I do when it’s close, but I’m going to start calling it more, even if there’s plenty of room and no obstacles (you know, buses) to go around.

Here’s something on craigslist:

Schwinn 684 1990’s aluminium with 105 group for $200. The seller does not know how to hold a camera steady, but the bike has shifters on the downtube!Love the giant reflector on the back.

As an aside, a cyclist on a nice bike and cycling gear does not connote “definitely serious” to me in this area. Some are and some aren’t.
Okay, it was really his calves that sealed it.
Does it make a difference that I was more or less in the center of the lane?

Make extra extra sure to ride the bike before you buy it. I was totally set to buy a Scott bike until I rode one and found that the geometry just didn’t agree with me. Now I’m very, very happy with my Giant road bike.
Also remember that, when buying a bike, you are essentially buying the bike shop, too. Not that you can’t get a bike serviced at another shop, but you’ll often get deals where you bought it, and they’re also more likely to be experienced in servicing the brand you buy.

Sorry for the slow reply. Last i checked, I was not a spambot. But if Hal has anything to say about it, that could change.
Very glad to hear that. Welcome to the forum!

ParticipantI’d second the advice on Capital Bikeshare. I used it for six months or so before I bought my own bike, and still use it occasionally when it’s more convenient.
DC isn’t hilly unless you go north from LeDroit Park – once you hit V or W St NW, you’re going to be uphill for a bit. Some streets are six or seven blocks of gradual climb, some are one or two blocks of pretty serious hill.
From LeDroit Park to the Verizon center should be an easy bike ride.

ParticipantSeriously, with the fenders and the color of your wheels, it looked to me at first like the same wheels as a Capital Bikeshare bike.
jrenaut
ParticipantThat is a ridiculous and beautiful bike.
