Participantthis was by far my worst year in terms of days and mileage, between a week of vacation (fun!) and then having an obnoxious crash (not so fun!). according to strava i’m almost exactly 150 miles short of where i was this time last year, though in my defense my crash this year happened earlier in the game than getting hit by a car last year. i should probably stop getting injured during freezing saddles…

ParticipantPut me down for one. Found the only patch of black ice on my commute. Scratched up my wedding ring, which cut my hand, and felt a couple ribs pop uncomfortably. The bike is fine though, other than a couple scratches on the shifter and pedal.

Participantalrighty then! i’m back from the bahamas and seem to have lost a good bit of the wobblyness and dizziness from being on land after the cruise, but picked up a bit of the cruise-plague. that being said, i should be able to get back to normal relatively quickly and try to make up for lost time!

Participantman, i should have taken a picture of the pristine part of my ride this morning. on the way home it’s just going to be a gross and slushy

Participanthowdy team, i’m jon. i live and work in rockville, so i’ll be up here most of the time, though i should be able to make my way to a couple group rides with you fine folks. i’m going to be out on a cruise from january 25-30, but i’m going to try to hunt down some way to ride on the days that we’re on land. i’m really hoping someone brings a folding bike on the ship and i can ride it around deck a couple times, but i kind of doubt that’ll happen.

oh. well… sometimes when a beer loves… well, likes a beer a very much… i mean they kind of like each other sometimes, they’ll come together and take their… labels off and… a stork will deliver them a baby beer that’s like a mixture of them?

Participanti finally stopped by Saints Row Brewing in Rockville today! i think they just opened about 4 months ago so they’re pretty new, and the owner and bartender were both super friendly.

is Sweaty Pineapple Pants. it’s a pineapple sour and it’s awesome. if you like a funky sour with pineapple, this is your guy. i also don’t know how to rotate the picture so… turn your head i guess?
i also tried two others, but my stupid phone went from 26% to dead in 15 minutes, so no pictures.
i also tried Return of the Space Cowboy, which is an american IPA made with candied fruits and pear. honestly it tasted more like blueberries to me, but i still liked it.
finally i got a Behind the Cape and Cowl, which was awesome. a Double Black IPA that tasted like a chocolate stout had a baby with a strong IPA.

Based upon what I’m seeing in Strava, Garmin GPS units seem to be having a harder time than the riders
two years ago i lost a ride because my garmin 500 froze and died and i didn’t notice. it wasn’t super fun to have to go back outside and sleaze to make up for it.
since i switched to a watch i haven’t had that problem anymore.

What size are you? If it’s a 58/59 frame, you can keep the new bike at my house so that your wife doesn’t find out.
sadly a 54/55.

He could ride an exercise bike in the ship’s gym and register plenty of Strava miles so long as the ship was under way. Not really in the Freezing Saddles spirit, though.
wait… would it count if the stationary bike was outside and moving, even if i wasn’t the one moving it? i think this warrants at least a couple pages of debate

This right here is one of the most fun rides I’ve ever done. 2.2 miles, never went more than a mile from home, 5.6 mph avg. There was over a foot of snow on the ground and the roads were basically clear of cars. Just people walking or cross country skiing. And then me with the fenders taken off, cheap knobby cross tires thrown on, and flat pedals instead of SPDs. If you ever get this opportunity I highly recommend you take it.
That day was amazing fun! I spent a while going up and down a tiny hill in my old neigborhood, falling over and over, and a woman came out and asked “Are you just learning to ride a bike?”
all i hope is that an awesome snow day like that doesn’t come up at the end of january, since i’ll be on a cruise for a couple days. apparently they don’t let you bring bikes on cruises.

I tempted my wife with beerneuring and now she’s a convert.
haha, i tried that last year. she said she’ll just meet me with the car. she is also convinced that anyone biking under 50 degrees is crazy, and maybe even anyone out under 60 degrees.

Participantwoohoo! i’m registered and this year when i asked my wife if she wanted to join she moved up from “what are you insane?” to “no thanks”!
only a couple years until she says maybe!

Participantfor that air quality alert yesterday i tried riding with a light cloth over my mouth and nose trying to act like a filter. it made me feel significantly hotter, soaked through, and made it harder to breathe. i think i may just have to take the (potentially minor) hit to my lungs or just take a shorter route.
