Now I feel confident that I don’t have to hurry home when the sun goes down. It is a little on the heavy side but that’s a small price to pay for safety.

KLizotte, thanks for the information. What you said above is pretty much what I was thinking. My light gets me to and from work on the short fall and winter days, but I’d like to feel I can stay out at night and not rush home. And it seems like a good investment in safety, since it will last for years and can be moved from bike to bike.

Thank you for the offer to take a look, but I’m in Baltimore so I can’t take you up on it.

That is the lowest setting. Wish it went lower.

Pete, just to confirm — you wish this light had a lower setting? ‘Cuz that’s why I’m looking at the Strada. But the Strada weighs twice as much and costs more.

This is a great deal! If they had this deal when I was looking I would have bought the Diablo. I ended up buying the Joystick that Pete talked me into buying and haven’t looked back. Awesome light.

I’m looking at the Strada, it has a “low beam,” pointed at the road. I’ve been using an inexpensive Cateye light, which has been basically OK for my purposes when the batteries are charged. It uses AA batteries, and I’ve been using rechargeables in it. The rechargeables don’t give you much warning before they run out of power. I like that the Exposure lights have a built-in battery gauge, in addition to all the extra light.

I add on (whether I was doing it or not) the time it takes to get to the gym and back, and the time to work out, as my commute is a significant workout. That changes the timing comparison considerably.

I agree that the fitness benefit is a key selling point for a lot of people. Most people realize they need a lot more exercise than they’re getting. For those who are interested in doing something about it, combining biking with things they need to do, like commuting and running errands, may be the most time-efficient way to go about it. More efficient than driving everywhere and then making a separate trip to the gym or spending a half hour on the treadmill in the basement. Also, non-cyclists tend to assume that biking is always much slower than driving, but it’s not true.

Hey, you’re using Tapatalk’s mapping feature. I’m seeing the map, but no point marker.

It would be safer for drivers if traffic speed on the GW Mem. Parkway could be brought under control. I used to have to merge on to the Parkway, northbound, from Chain Bridge Road, just north of the Chain Bridge. There’s only a short distance where you can easily see the Parkway from the ramp, and only about 20 feet of merge area. Not much time to decide whether to speed up to 65 mph and merge, or stop. I had some close calls there. The road isn’t designed for high speeds.

Combining commuting with exercising also adds purpose to the exercise. When I’m running on a treadmill, I’m very aware that I could just stop and go do something else. Maybe something more useful, cross something off my list. When I’m commuting or doing errands by bike, there’s no thought of just stopping.

yeah, you’re on your own for that one. I NEVER know where people are talking about when they mention that climb. Can’t ever seem to find it on a map.

It’s off N. Glebe Road, at Chain Bridge — it’s the bike route to get to the sidewalk on Chain Bridge and avoid the last steep, winding part of Glebe down to the river.

By the way, Chain Bridge will be completely closed this weekend.

The last tire I replaced had a bulge in the sidewall, and that’s happened with other tires. Something else to watch for.

I want to throw out kudos to CCrew for this reply addressing the original poster’s question. I hope she’s long gone and used her own judgment about what to buy, as most people do. But, if not, I’ll throw some more ideas out — Pennyfarthing! Dutch Bike! Electric Bike!

You lost me right there. Mobile Web version only for me, thanks. Can you set it up so that it remembers if you DON’T want to use tapatalk?

You would only connect through the Tapatalk app if you have it installed and deliberately use it to connect. If you choose to use a web browser, you won’t be pushed over to the app, even if you have it installed. I think the only issue is the annoying message that Stop Means Stop mentioned, and that should go away. I just connected using Safari on my iPad, and didn’t get any message.

I saw that, too. “There’s an app available.” I’m hoping it will appear a limited number of times. I can’t believe they would make that appear every time. Not on purpose, anyway.

    Tapatalk Features

Using Tapatalk, you can instantly generate a map of your location using your device’s GPS. This might be useful for trail condition reports. You can also upload photos saved on your device. I’m trying it now, using the iPhone app.

    Thought Tapatalk supported vBulletin?
    http://www.tapatalk.com/

The Washington Area Bike Forum can now be accessed with the Tapatalk app for Android and iPhone. This is a very popular app that provides access to thousands of forums. It works offline, and is designed for small screens. On Android devices, you can create a widget to get to the forum directly.

After installing the Tapatalk app ($2.99) you can search for the forum by name, or go through their network hierarchy — it’s under Sports/Running and Biking. I’d rather have it under Transportation, but they don’t have a transportation category, and this is where all of the bike forums are.

I researched vBulletin’s solution for creating a mobile version (vBulletin Mobile Suite). Apparently it provides a way to develop custom apps, which we would then have to submit to Apple and Android Market. It looks like a pain, I’m seeing a lot of negative feedback about it, and there doesn’t seem to be a big demand. So we’re going to shelve that idea for now.
