ParticipantPete, thanks for sharing that. The Baltimore event is close to my house; I might go to that.

I do the same thing. My studded tires will stay on way longer than most. While it slows me down, I love the bacon sizzlin’ sound while rolling ; )
I almost mentioned that, too! The whirring and crackling is very pleasant, and helps alert pedestrians who are preoccupied with being cold.

ParticipantLove the LED stips. These bikes are practically parade-ready. I also mean that in the nicest way.

ParticipantI put studded tires on when the first snow was forecast; they will probably stay on until spring. No doubt it makes it a bit harder to pedal, but my short rides are still easier with studded tires and 20-50 degree temperatures than they were in the summer, with regular tires and 70-100 degree temperatures.

ParticipantI rode the C&O trail once during the “off” season, and the NPS had removed the handles from the water pumps that are spaced along the trail. That was years ago, but I wouldn’t count on those pumps unless you have current information.

ParticipantI just discovered that some posts to this thread were automatically flagged by filters in the forum software and were not visible to everyone. I’m confident that we can keep this from happening again now that we know about it. All posts should be visible now. My apologies for the delay. Luckily it’s still cold.

Participant“Now, I just noticed some WABA mod deleted my ENTIRE POST responding to ****** above, without leaving any indication that I responded. “
I deleted your post because it contained a personal attack. I intended to immediately post a reason for deleting it, but I was stuck on a commuter train and found my iPad could not deal with the image verification field. I agree this was not a good way to do it. Being on a moving train also would have made it difficult to edit the post, which also would have been better. I did scan it to see if there was anything about bicycling that could have been left; didn’t see anything.
I’m also editing this post. From here on out, please refrain from personal attacks, including name calling.

ParticipantThank you for reporting back.

Ann…Well, he just didn’t see you…
Isn’t it appalling how that excuse actually flies? After Alice Swanson was killed in a right hook by a garbage truck, the truck driver was able to say “Well, I didn’t see her” and that was good enough.
There was a case a few years ago when a woman killed a cyclist while driving with frost all over her car windows, and I think she was lighting a cigarette. Her defense was that she didn’t see the cyclist. I should check my facts before I post, but I think that was in Maryland, which at the time had a very difficult standard to prove “gross negligence,” which would make it a more serious crime. She had to pay a small fine. There was some movement recently on changing that standard for drivers who injure or kill someone, that may have passed, I’m not sure.
What happened to you was not negligence, though, that was assault with a deadly weapon. I’m glad you’re not hurt.

Did a whois on the domain name to see who it belonged to. You realize it’s owned by a hosting company and not the county? Might want to change that as it means you don’t technically own the name, but that may be your desire in the event of litigation.

Visit: http://www.urljet.comThanks for that; I’ll check into it. We’re advertising “WashingtonAreaBikeForum.com” now, and we own that domain name. But we just redirected that to the original domain, BikeArlingtonForum.com. The original name was registered for us by the hosting company, who have a reputation to maintain, but I’ll be sure to check and see if we need to do anything about it.
You are correct, this forum is operated by Arlington County, now in partnership with WABA and goDCgo, a program run by DDOT.

ParticipantWelcome to the forum! Thank you for your thoughts on forum operations and best practices. You are correct, comments have been closed to the cursing thread. All members have the ability to start new threads to discuss bicycling in the Washington DC area, or to make suggestions for making this forum a better tool for discussing bicycling.

ParticipantThanks for the thoughtful discussion, everyone. I decided to remove the pictures. Having them here creates a hostile environment for women, and if my bosses at Arlington County knew about it, they would create a hostile environment for me. I don’t know if WABA or DDOT would feel differently about it — I haven’t seen comments from them one way or the other. If they decide to overrule me, I’m sure we can find more pictures.

I much prefer to let the community sort it out organically.
I see your point, but a problem is that “the community” of bicyclists at this point in time is mostly young men. My own interest in this forum is not so much to provide a clubhouse for the existing, small, cycling fraternity. But that’s just my opinion, I’m saying it as a participating member of the community.

ParticipantGood article, Mark. I’m really glad to see all of the information about winter riding this year. Especially for commuting. I don’t care if people go out for pleasure rides or not, but if people realize they can commute by bike year-round, that could get some families to realize that they don’t really need that second car.
