ParticipantUsually it’s “careful”. Rarely works though.

ParticipantThe side-path through the construction area is really getting unrideable at this point. It’s like riding through beach sand in places. If they’re going to keep this detour in place for awhile they need a more permanent solution to this soft and dangerous surface.

ParticipantIt made a couple of loops around the Tysons area too. Flew more or less right over our office building, but it was fairly high up. My iPhone pics of it are pretty pathetic

ParticipantI hope they get to those sections out before Rt 28 this year. Those gaps in the trail are truly bone-jarring.
I guess the funds for the W&OD and the Custis Trail must come out of different buckets. There are parts of the Custis that are desperately in need of resurfacing.

ParticipantFreshbikes is where I got my bikes, but I’ve always been too chicken to do these rides. I’m the typical old and fat guy who bought way more bike than he needs. I hate to be a living cliche… I want to give it a try though. Maybe I’ll round up a beater bike for the ride

ParticipantHeading westbound this morning about 7:50 (late for work) the trail was completely blocked off. No detour signs. No nothing. The paving equipment was taking up the whole trail. I ended up heading up Cedar and then wandering around the backstreets until I found my way to Adahi St. which I knew intersected the trail near the Navy Fed. CU. What a ridiculous mess to create at commuter rush hour!

ParticipantThey were out again at 4:00pm this evening. I rolled up to the stop sign, and came to a near-complete stop while standing on the pedals (closest to a track stand I can do.) The cop gave me a smirk as I went by, but didn’t stop me. I must have stopped long enough to pass muster.

ParticipantI wouldn’t put it where only bike riders and walkers could see it (Custis @ W&OD). I’d put it where car drivers can see it, to set their expectations of community norms (i.e. bikes belong etc.)

ParticipantAt least some parts of Loyalty Rd. were recently paved. Not the whole thing, but it’s not as horrible as it was. I rode it a couple of weeks ago.

ParticipantI don’t run anymore, thank god, but I’ve done some running on the trail just west of Vienna (half a mile maybe?) I don’t know what the name of it is. I think it’s right by a Vienna city limits sign. The trail is on the other side of the creek, and then goes up into the hills. I don’t know if there’s five miles worth of trails, but there’s a fair bit in there. Hilly too.

ParticipantThanks!

ParticipantThis is a bit out of your way, but gets you as far as Aldie. I’m not sure if there’s a better way to get from there to Chantilly vs. riding on Rt 50. I haven’t gone that way personally:
Take 55 West from Gainesville
R on Antioch
R on Waterfall
L on Mill Creek
L on Berkley
R on Mountain
L on Old Carolina
L on Levi
R on New Mountain
L on 50 to AldieJimF22003
ParticipantYeah, sometimes it’s better to just get out and get wet, than to sit inside and mope.
Of course there’s something to be said for a good mope too

ParticipantLast night on the wooden causeway by Roosevelt Island on the MVT, a guy who was old enough to know better (i.e. older than me), was sitting up, pedaling, and using both hands to manipulate his cell phone, and sloooowwwwly drifting into oncoming traffic. I gave him a “heads up” as I passed but he didn’t even glance up. There’s not a lot you can do about some forms of idiocy.
