I notice they are tearing up all the concrete lane dividers on Gallows Rd between Merrifield and Tysons Corner. I wonder if they’ve started the “road diet” process of narrowing the travel lanes to create bike lanes on Gallows? I had heard that the bike lanes were coming some time this year, and it would make sense that they would need to get rid of the current lane separators.
Anybody know if this is what is happening?

Looks like half a loaf, at least south of Cottage. Still, better than the status quo.

Bike lanes will stretch from Idylwood Rd just north of the W&OD Trail to Old Courthouse Rd. The work includes removing the concrete lane dividers so I assume the project is underway. I’ll ask Charlie Strunk, the county bike coordinator, at the FABB meeting tonight.

Where they’re repaving and repainting the road between the W&OD and Idylwood, they’re painting a yellow dividing stripe right down the middle of the road (i.e. putting the road on a “diet” and removing the center passing lane to make room for the new bike lanes on the side of the road. Hopefully in another couple of weeks we’ll have on-road bike lanes running all the way from the Merrifield metro to Tysons at Rt 7.

That would be nice!
I noticed recently Westmoreland St has had sharrows painted on it just north of Longfellow Middle School and up past the Kirby intersection 😎 which is often part of my return commute.

love the idea of this. if i wasn’t leavin thatd likely be a benefit to my commute, though i do like my current route of wolftrap->woodford->gosnell/old courthouse. it’s pretty pain free.
May 18, 2012 at 8:26 pm #940958JimF22003ParticipantThey’ve started painting the bike lanes on Gallows Rd today:
May 19, 2012 at 8:25 pm #940996accParticipantI came through Gallows Road late last night. It looks like they have striped the northbound lane from the W&OD to a few hundred yards past the fire house. The new narrow traffic lanes are bringing the vehicle speed down. This is a nice addition to the Tysons area.
