Have not done that one, or any of the other “Grand Fondos”. My impression is that these are kind of pricey, and racy (neither of these appeal to me.) I can’t say about the Richmond one specifically though.

A nice event I’ve done a couple of times is the RABA century in September:

Yes, confirmed I still “got it” and that I’m also completely insane. What could be better?

Sunday I did a 100 mile organized ride in La Plata. That wasn’t insane. That was just stupid.

Breaking Away is one of my all-time favorites. A good movie, not just a good bike movie. Dennis Quaid looks like he’s about 12.

I don’t think energy gels are meant to address cramping. They’re just quick-acting carbs (i.e. sugar.)

I usually bring a Gu or two on a long ride. Most times I don’t end up using them. I tend to go with a combination of energy bars (Clif, Powerbar) and what passes for “real food” at whatever country stores I find along the way (bananas, bags of chips, fig newtons, or even a Snickers bar.)

Toward the end of the ride I find it hard to take in solids. The idea just doesn’t appeal, and I get a little queasy, especially if it’s hot. Then I might have the Gu on the last leg of the trip just to give me a quick hit for the home stretch.

I loved K Street Traffic! Everybody should check it out.

I’d do it for sure. I’d love to see a fully fleshed out and tested cue sheet for the ride in any case. Thanks for taking this on!

Nice! My first century ever was doing the end-to-end W&OD plus the Arlington Loop. I guess it’s kind of a tradition :)

The longest mostly-continuous climb that I know of that is somewhat local is to start in Sperryville, climbing up to Skyline Drive, and then continuing on south to Pinnacles. I think this takes you from about 700 feet to 3500 or so, with no real flats except for right at the entrance to Shenandoah NP.

    That’s a good one :)

Recommended. I didn’t get to do this last year, but I did it the year before. Lots of rollers and beautiful country in the foothills beneath the Blue Ridge Mts, and some more farmy country as well.

Wilson Rd, between Carters Run and Cannonball Gate, near Warrenton VA, this morning. The road was closed, but I just hoofed it around the downage. Kind of hairy climbing through the bushes in my road shoes. Had to duck under the power lines. Hope they weren’t hot….

D’oh! I’ve drunk at least half a gallon of Tysons Finest directly from the tap in my office since yesterday. So far so… URP!

I just did 55 miles on the Eastern Shore with probably less than 1000 feet of climbing. It was a fast ride, but freaking mind-numbing. Gives me a new appreciation for hills!

I did a century on the Eastern Shore (the 6 Pillars ride I think) where the Garmin ended up showing 199 feet of elevation change for the whole ride. It wasn’t my mind that was numb, it was my rear end…

I’ve done the Reston Century about four times I think. It’s a good event, very well attended. I’m not super crazy about the way the do the routes. There are about four separate loops, and the rest stops all are in Hamilton, so there’s not a lot of variety there, and you end up riding the same roads a bit getting into and out of there. The first year I did it it was a true nice big loop, which I prefer.

The local cops watch over traffic very very closely, and have ticketed riders going through stop signs in the past (not objecting to this — just a heads up :) )

I’ve ridden all those roads so many times on my own, that it’s hard for me to justify doing this century ride any more, but this is a great introduction to some of the nicer parts of Loudon county such as Snickersville Pike, Hillsboro and vicinity, Waterford etc.

Sounds like we live within a few blocks of one another. I’m not exactly sure where you’re trying to go (too lazy to google map it I guess). The roads I’ve been on that you mentioned were not very pleasant.

When I’m taking the long way home from Tysons I’ll take this route:

Not a direct link, but I like riding through the Lake Barcroft area. Only slightly hairy area is crossing Rt 7.
