ParticipantThey were working on the ramp when I went through too. I was going to rant about how they were just using it to park their tools and using it as a workbench. I didn’t realize they were making it wider. Looks like they were working late to make it happen, so sounds like they’re being responsible.

ParticipantI saw a fair number of riders out and about. There was some kind of group ride or event in Luray I think. I saw quite a few identi-kitted groups riding in packs.
Or maybe it wasn’t their kits. Maybe it was the spots before my eyes…

Epic. MoM prep?
Yup. I’ve done MoM three times. Last year I missed because I had emergency surgery in April and was off the bike for 2 months.
Come to think of it, this time a year ago I was in the hospital recovering from a bowel obstruction.
I could use some of those drugs about now…

ParticipantMy favorite near-death experience at Gravelly Point was with a guy on roller blades and some ski poles like you would use with cross-country skis. Complete with pointy ends.
He stopped on the trail and pivoted off to the right to look at the airplanes with his poles tucked under his arms — so the pointy ends were pointing DIRECTLY at me like so many jousting poles… Missed it by that much…

ParticipantI’ve only ridden up the hill twice. Both times I chickened out at the s-curve. It really wasn’t the steepness. It was just the narrowness and the guardrails. I’ve fallen over at slow speed before and lived. But never into a metal guard rail. I’ll save that experiment for another day.

ParticipantOn Monday evening I saw two young women on Cabis heading WEST on the W&OD at Sandburg St near Gallows. It was actually getting a bit late. I hope they had time to get back before it got dark. Actually I hope they were heading the right direction…

ParticipantI have a pair of Specialized BG gloves from a few years ago that I like, but are disintegrating. They had a velcro closure and were fairly easy to remove. I bought a newer pair last fall, and they don’t have the velcro. They’re difficult to remove without tearing the finger pieces. Also they hurt my hands worse when coming to a hard stop with my hands on the hoods. It’s getting better as they’ve broken in however. I still prefer the old style.

ParticipantVVill, Blacknell and DaveK riding through Union Cemetery, Virginia on a LOVELY route that took us from Fort Valley (Near Front Royal) to Mathias, WV. 96 miles and 11,000 feet of climbing. Great day in the saddle!
I did the Edinburg Gap ride on Sunday (in reverse) starting in Front Royal. The wind out there was brutal. Fortunately I had the wind at my back all the way back down Fort Valley Rd from Kings Crossing.
I only saw two other riders out all day long though. They must all be out riding the dirt roads like you and your buddies.
It was windier than this looks:

ParticipantOn some forums it’s kind of a running joke that people will yell out “Everything OK” as they whiz past somebody on the side of the road.
That usually applies to people having a mechanical. I don’t think very many people would see somebody hurt and bleeding on the side of the road and ask “You OK?” if they didn’t intend to help

ParticipantAlso have the Spec. TriCross (from a few years ago.) I rode a 60-mile out-and-back on the C&O from the Cumberland end (down to Paw-Paw and back). The trail was fine, but I was pretty beaten up afterwards. I’ve ridden from the DC end past Great Falls a few times, and it’s OK if the trail is dry. I believe I used 700/35 tires.

ParticipantThere was a short story on this on the early news on NBC4 this morning. Don’t know if there’s a link to it yet.

ParticipantI ride a road bike almost exclusively, but I rarely get flats. I average maybe one flat every 3 or 4 thousand miles (I might get two or three a year, or even less.)

ParticipantIt seems like a certain kind of saddle likes me for awhile, and then it gets tired of seeing my rear end. I used the Toupe for a couple of years and I loved it. Then it started to hurt on the sitbones after 60 or 75 miles. I thought I’d found “the one” with the Fizik Alliante, but I’m having trouble with it now on longer rides as well. With this one the sitbones are fine, but the part in between goes numb (IYKWIM).
I may try for the Antares to see if that will do me for a season or two…
