ParticipantNo strobes on the trail please
And even with the steady light, be sure to dim it with your hand, or redirect it for oncoming traffic, especially when it’s completely dark.

ParticipantI was just kidding about my stop sign question, but srsly… I can’t imagine stopping there if the way is clear. I always yield when entering the W&OD from the Custis, but a full stop just for advocacy points?
Guess I’m just bad.

ParticipantI’ve been happy with the Serfas True 500. I only use it on the second lowest brightness when I’m on the trails, and even then I have to redirect it when there’s oncoming riders. It has an easy mount clip for the handlebar, and can swivel left to right, so it’s easy to direct away from the trail for oncoming riders, so I don’t have to cover it with my hand.

ParticipantI rode up on Skyline Drive on Saturday, thinking it might be my last chance for awhile because of the coming (probable) government shutdown. I figured traffic might not be too bad because the leaves have really only just started to turn. But it was pretty bad. I can’t imagine what it will be like during the peak period. I rode from Elk Wallow south to Loft Mountain and back. Traffic was worst around Big Meadows/Skyland, and a little better south of there.
The worst was not distracted leaf peepers though. It was the horrible car clubs. There was a group of about 20 Dodge Chargers that would come by revving their engines, passing too close, and just generally acting like jackwads. They must have passed me 9 or 10 times. There were other car rally clubs, including the Corvettes, and even a clan of Suzuki Samurai’s, or some weird thing. Then of course there were the usual obnoxious loud motorcycle riders.
The weather kind of sucked too. It was supposed to be 70 and mostly sunny, but it was overcast the whole day, and the temperature never got above 55. I ended up with 111 miles, and 10.3K of climbing.

ParticipantI’m a decent bike handler, but I don’t think I would try to ride around those tight turns. Is it intended that this trail is just for walking bikes up and down the embankment?

ParticipantHere’s one I hadn’t heard of, out of Luray, the “Page County Grown” century on october 12th. Just signed up for it

ParticipantThe last time I took Loyalty road they had just repaved a bunch of it (not all) so it was much improved from earlier years.
Here’s a 139-mile loop (my PR) that crosses at Harpers Ferry instead of POR, Brunswick, or Whites Ferry (my Garmin battery died, so you have to trust me on the distance

Here’s one for Whites Ferry:

ParticipantI usually avoid it once the leaves start turning, but I don’t think it would be that terrible. When the traffic gets heavy people get slower anyway. Most of the peeping happens at the overlooks. Monday wouldn’t be as bad as the weekend even with the holiday. (I don’t think I get it off
)
You might want to try riding in Fort Valley however if you haven’t done that before (it’s near the northern end of Shenandoah NP if you’re not familiar with it.) That’s also a gorgeous ride. Google for “SkyMass” or “MassSky” for the route.

ParticipantYou: last night on the Custis, a great blue heron, standing right in the middle of the trail, acting just like a Canada Goose. The MVT is down thataway…

ParticipantThe Great Pumpkin Ride is a lot of fun. I first heard of it through my family doctor. He’s not a hard-core rider at all.
What I did last year was to start in Marshall, ride to the ride, and then back at the end so I could round it out to a century.

ParticipantHmm, I might try that the next time I visit home in Idaho. It would take a lot longer though… Out there the country farm roads are laid out in 1-mile squares:
