Gonna fly my WABA Flag with y’all on Thursday. Bike Kindly is an advocacy project with WABA that is sponsored by the wonderful people who bring us Kind Bars (Which, by the way, are AWESOME!!!). The idea is to promote good cycling behavior by having positive interactions with cyclists. It is so much nicer than getting called-out for not announcing a pass or blowing a stop sign. This totally fits in with the whole Be A PAL project that Bike Arlington is doing.

Where: Intersection of the Custis and W&OD Trails.
When: Thursday, October 10 from 4-6pm. If one or two people can show up a few minutes early, it would help.
What exactly are we doing? The message is “Thank you for stopping by!” People are given a great opportunity to actually stop at that stop sign. If they do so, they get a snack…. and some Bike Arlington Swag. We’re gonna make it really easy for people. We’ll have some folks along the trails with signs that say “Stop and get a prize!” If they want to stop, they get something.

It is as simple as that. I’ll have the WABA Trailer with me. If you’re going to the BikeSwell Movie Premier, you’re more than welcome to roll with me to the event. We’ll start packing up and heading out a few minutes before 6pm.

This should be fun and really good outreach. Please come join me!

    Thanks!

    Pete

Well since I am going to be riding through there about that time anyway I will definitely stop for a bit. Sounds like fun.

I’ll be there to help set up but need to leave by 5. All this of course is contingent on there not being a downpour.

There’s a stop sign on the Custis as you enter on to the WOD.

slightly related sort of. Will there be a BA light the night blinkie and reflective gear give away night this year? I am out of hand out blinkies but still have a plentiful supply of MUP ninjas.

I want to be a PAL rather than a plow.

Yes, after the day light saving change.

Yes, yet another stupid W&OD stop sign. Yield might make sense, stop not so much.

I observed a much higher percentage of cyclists with lights this morning between 6:45 and 7:10 am than I did last Friday during the same time period. This time I was on the W&OD, last week I was on the Custis. I haven’t been out much past sunset to make any qualified observation.

Isn’t our discussion usually about whether these trail signs are legal and under what statute the local authorities (Arlington County or the NVRPA) are acting. That stop sign and the one under I-66 at the Custis 0 mile post (only a couple hundred feet away) are the only trail-on-trail stop signs I am familiar with in the area.

No, NVRPA has them scattered around all along W&OD, going out into Loudon. They seem to have some sort of bizarre compulsion to put stop signs at intersections, without any real rationale.

I was just kidding about my stop sign question, but srsly… I can’t imagine stopping there if the way is clear. I always yield when entering the W&OD from the Custis, but a full stop just for advocacy points?

    Guess I’m just bad.

    Well now, that makes sense.
