SurlyTed and I would like to celebrate the recent news that DC Metro is now finally allowing bikes on trains during peak hours by sponsoring a new freezing saddles pointless prize competition.
This winter’s your chance to demonstrate that You are the KOM/QOM of METRO’S PEAK hours by going multi-modal and riding both your trusty rusty bikey and a smokey brokey subway on into work.
To score a point, ride your bike to or from a metro station and post a picture of your bike from that ride on the train during the newly opened peak hours (5 to 10 am and 3 to 7 pm weekdays). You should pause the strava ride while you’re in the system so nothing weird happens to your gps/ride data. Put hashtag #bafsmetro in your ride to show up on the leaderboard, or post the pic and link to the ride here in this thread (hell, your impressions of the experience would be appreciated too).
The person who proves multi-modal the most times will be the Metro Peak Pioneer and win a prize to be stoked about!
Rides that use the #bafsmetro hashtag will tally here:
https://freezingsaddles.org/pointless/hashtag/bafsmetroDrat. I’m probably missed out on at least 4 rides (two days of commuting) as I 1 – missed this, 2 – only had my fly cameras going. (maybe a still from approaching a station? and 3 – I split my strava and run it as two rides. one to geton station and one from getoff station.

ParticipantThe other Jeff here.
I live near Wheaton, and work near the White Flint Metro. I’m also running the #survivor pointless prize.
2017 was my return to the bike after being put in the ICU by a car in August 2016. Even with that I was able to ride over 1000 miles in 2016. This will be my second dip into the insanity of Freezing Saddles. My goal is two commute days a week. At least one sleaze ride on one of the non-commute days, and one weekend/group ride every fortnight.
Hope to meet the rest of you on the road soon!

Do we get to vote people off the island?
Someone (maybe even themselves) has already tried to vote them off. So no.

ParticipantAs the pointless one here – my quick story:
Commuting to work on 4 August 2016. At less than a mile from home a driver took a left turn an t-boned me. First time back on the bike was late February and I returned to commuting in April. Have now biked over 1000 miles in 2017.

ParticipantSo I’ve decided to create a (not-so) pointless prize of “survivor”.
This is for the person who is verified as coming back from a bike related injury(1). I.E. Hit by car (me), fell off the bike and broke a bone/dislocated shoulder, etc.
The incident must have kept you off the bike for some time last calendar year.
Most miles wins…something. Currently thinking of an origami wheelchair.
And something else to be decided later.August 28, 2017 at 12:57 pm in reply to: Route advice sought Wheaton, MD –> Lovetsville, VA #1074964jeffp
ParticipantFollowup.
Ride was wonderful. Went via Brunswick. Took me just under four hours. Thanks for all the ideas. If I bike out that way again I may take the W&OD route if I’m more recovered.
jeffp
ParticipantOne of the reasons I’m loathe to do an extra 10 or so miles is this will be my longest ride in my recovery from being hit by a car (and shattered) last year.

I guess I’d try peeling off at Falls Road in Rockville, taking that to Glen and then Esworthy. Then onto Seneca to River, ride down to Violette’s Lock Road and pick up the C&O there up to White’s Ferry.
Looks good, but over 10 more miles. I think my win is the northern route, which has only about 10 miles on one lane, and going over in Brunswick.

Depending on your preference for trails, you may want to consider Crescent to Chain Bridge (using rough trail) and then basically Williamsburg West to the WOD in Falls Church. That should cut a lot of mileage rather than going through Georgetown.
Thanks, but I looked at that. Just mapped the route using Chain/Williamsburg/W&OD to be sure and it’s just about 60 miles. Nope.
