Are you saying I should eat a skinny person? I never thought about it, but with enough butter and salt anything tastes good.

I know many of you procrastinate when taking down the Christmas decorations, but it may be a good time to remove the Rudolf antlers you had tied to your helmet for the last month.

Started early today, and it was one of my coldest starts yet. This is going to be a cold couple months!

I signed up for a few rides/races I have no business doing, so I have to push myself to make the cut off times. So consistency has to be my big goal, and elevation. Elevation is my way to keep myself honest for either I make it up the hill or I don’t, no way around it. I’m slow, but if I’m going slow up a hill I still feel like I’m working. So my goal will be 7000 with 400k.

Yea, I guess you guys are right, SkyMass doesn’t belong,,,,,but what a ride! It is hard for me to make a non organized bastard ride list. I don’t ride with GPS much so many of my rides are out and backs, which really don’t make the cut.

To revise The Five Glorious Bastards organized list a tad

    1. Mountains of Misery May 25th
    2. Diabolical Double June 21st
    3. Mountains Mama Aug 2nd
    4. Fredrick Fondo August 24th
    5. Jeremiah Bishop September 28th
**** Storming Thunder Ridge may 18th ( just a little too packed in May to fit the list)

Zoinks, didn’t realize Mountains of Misery was a double metric!!
My goal for any of these fondos is simply not die and finish. Hopefully I’ll hit a few this year

You guys are hardcore dropping SkyMass from the list. It’s meets my barometer of difficulty of 1K in 10, in this case 80m with ~8k. There are a couple cat 2’s and few 3/4’s, it’s a bastard, and lets face it, it is probably one of our most famous/epic rides for visitors. I am getting too old. I might substitute Front royal to Big Meadows and back, but that is an out and back, not really a ride, just penance.

That WV mountain bike race sounds amazingly cool. I would love to try it, but is sounds too serious for a century rider like myself.

Ailments are hitting me too. My knees have been bad since my wrestling days. However, I have found a properly placed bike seat to be the best medicine for bad knees.
I do need more time to recover, but I have found a recovery ride gets me back to real cranking than sitting around. If I do a long crank with hills, followed by a easy recovery ride the next day, I’m ready to ride on day three. It is when I stop, my body stops.
As for chores around the house, forget about it, they kill me. The thought of getting out the ladder to take down the lights has me reaching for an epidural.

So, something less than 35 perhaps?

Funny, I just became dehydrated and out of breath.
Now, you have posted some beastly rides on the site. Add some of your worst to the list. I thought I read before you did Misery. How bad is it?

I am sorry that I questioned any of this. The fact that you were able to go approximately 35 on a mountain bike to catch an elite on a TT clears everything up.

I originally deleted the above comment for it did not really flow with the positive stuff that goes on through this site, but I stumbled across your Blog, and it appears that you’re proud to flag strava segments. I can only imagine that several of your previous flags were based on similar experiences to your recent 35mph incident. Btw, 35 on knobbies is terribly impressive for a “reverse Lemonder”.
I understand the need to flag certain segments, but your recent massive flagging was haphazardly done and hurt many average commuters who need a little extra to make the commute enjoyable. I would like to point out that I rarely travel any of the flag sections, but I know many who do. For all those commuters, this is one BikeArlington member who would like to apologize for the flagging.
Also, as a husband of a marathoner who frequently runs the MVT, WOD and other paths at night, my wife is comforted by the numerous BikeArlington commuters with their bright lights, and loud voices that would instantly have her back if trouble arose. Without them constantly coming by, I doubt if she would be running at night. So, your circle of runner friends may hate bikers, mine does not.

I normally don’t travel this section very much, but I did it last week. I just checked and most of the segments were flagged by you. You had to randomly flag over twenty segments. I started the ride at 5:30 am, and it was 32 degrees. To say there was no one around would have been an understatement. Although I did not try for any segments, or was even aware of any, it was great to see how I stacked up when I completed the ride. To have this taken away by you is somewhat annoying.
I have to believe many riders/commuters are going to be very upset by your action when they look at their workday commute tomorrow. You flagged several very popular segments that were held by several members on the site, that if I remember correctly were ridden by a couple thousand riders. Well done!
On another note, did the other rider actually say that? I am having a hard time seeing how this conversation, sorry argument, took place where it ended with him making the perfect fodder for a strava rant. After he threaded the baby carriages, and made the quintessential elite comment, did he also throw several used Gu wrappers in four mile run? Did you have to speed up to catch him, or being an elite, he waited to be drafted so you could converse, sorry argue.

SkyMass is doable, and probably one of my favorite rides, but it is damn hard. It is easy to forget how hard it is because it is such a nice ride. But climbing up Mass waiting for that damn cabin on the right is a death march.
The westernport wall is part of the DD. It was at mile 6 billion or something. It is so potholed at the start that my track stand skills were not up for it. A definite Bastard! Having to do it during a tri would cause me to bite down on my cyanide tooth capsule.

Same thing, my 4 has lasted for every ride I have done. I have done almost 10 hour rides with it on. It always last long enough to make a call on the ride home.
Another plus to the phone is the upload is wireless. I have a garmin 500 but always upload with iPhone. People complain that the iPhone distorts numbers, but my numbers are so close to my garmin that I no longer look.
