I have taken our car in for service at Koons and walked about a mile to the CaBi station at the main Arlington Library (just missing an ART bus, because I wasn’t familiar with their routes). So I can state personally how great it would be to have a station anywhere in Cherrydale, whether right off of Lee or in the proposed site.

Is there any way to put a permanent CaBi corral at Nationals Park? There are already two awesome guys at the bike valet who could assist with checking them in or out. Taking CaBi to the game is just too much of a gamble as it is–it’s a crapshoot whether you’ll be able to find a dock when you get there and unless you bold out of your seat at the last out and dash to the stations madly checking your phone as you watch the bikes disappear, it’s even harder to find a bike to go home.

I’ve often thought a CaBi corral on gamedays would be an ideal solution. The only downside might be that a lot of bikes would be tied up not being used in one spot for the three-hour games.

I definitely agree about a gameday corral. Although if the Nats aren’t willing to pay for Metro to run late, I doubt they’d be up for laying out the cash to make this work.

Another solution would be to just have a larger station right there… the demand is certainly there, at least 81 times per year. But I know that entails some extra cost. (Perhaps make it a 39-dock station from April-October, and move those docks somewhere else for the winter months?)

As it is, if I’m CaBi’ing to a game, I try to sit along the first base/RF side, and take the stairway exit behind the barbeque place, which runs right down to the station. Avoids fighting the crowds out the centerfield gate, and provides those precious seconds necessary to snag a bike. And if not, I now walk to one of the other stations in Near SE. Perhaps once the Boilermaker Shops open this winter, they’ll finally get around to adding the proposed station by Yards Park, which would mean there’d be 4 stations within a few blocks of the ballpark, 5 if you count 4th and M Southwest.

Check the official NBC Olympics website. They have links for video replays next to some of the events, possibly all of them. I think you have to be a cable or satellite TV subscriber and your channel lineup has to include MSNBC and CNBC. Then you sign in with your cable/satellite account when prompted. If you have never logged into your cable/satellite acct online, it’s easy to set it up using your acct. number on the TV provider site.

I haven’t checked since the games started today, but Comcast’s on-demand menu has been offering free recorded programs of many of the US Olympic Trials (and human interest stuff), so if you have access to on-demand cable (specifically), you’re likely to be able to get the programs o n your television that way, too.

I had a similar sprinkler experience heading across the Washington Monument grounds on yesterday’s morning commute — it was certainly a nice break from the 90-degree sun!

I agree with consularrider on the Memorial Bridge underpass.

I would also appreciate if they changed the walk light timing at the intersection of Pennsylvania and 20th (and Penn and 18th). In both cases, pedestrians get a don’t walk light 10-15 seconds before cars going in the same direction get a red light. As a result, almost all pedestrians ignore the lights entirely, leading to a colossal cluster at all times.

It’s definitely been an incentive for me to get out these last couple of mornings (and as the rain thinned out the crowds, I ventured onto Hains Point for the first time this morning to get an extra three miles in).

Yeah, this was my first winter since I started full-time commuting last May, and I feel like I still haven’t biked through a winter yet. (Not that I’m complaining, of course)!

One more team for the DC area list — I organized a group of GAO colleagues, on team “Will Bike for Cupcakes!” We’re currently at 1042 points, though I suspect a few team members are behind on their miles logging.

Two more in operation (and ever so slightly thickening the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor) at Veitch and Key, and Quinn and Key.

My thoughts on the proposed expansion on CABI in Arlington. The draft uses the wrong paradigm of corridors – I think the right paradigm is “islands.” I also suggest that the drafts principle of 1/2 mile distance between stations premised on 1 mile trips – is flawed and invalid for consideration in Arlington. CABI should be widely deployed in Arlington, it should not just overlay the subway system, it should not simply benefit the wealthy urban corridors. If widely deployed it would create a mesh network that leverages the Arlington bike infrastructure of trails and lanes, further Arlington’s goals of smart growth and car free, and result in economic benefits to businesses.

I really like some of your suggestions for an “island-based” approach to CaBi expansion, although I would aim to have the islands be pairs or trios of stations within a relatively small distance of each other, in order to mitigate potential dockblocking scenarios (and to make rebalancing efforts worthwhile). For example, put a station in the center of the Westover shopping area, along with one on Patrick Henry Drive at either Westover Park (across from Swanson MS) or Bon Air Park, connecting to the Custis and W&OD trails, and perhaps a third station near one of the larger garden-style apartment complexes on Washington Blvd.

It would still be a bit of a walk if someone was stuck at one of the stations, but not as bad as doubling back to EFC or Ballston Metro, or to somewhere else on a “corridor” such as the Lee-Harrison Shopping Center. It would also have the added benefit of introducing potential CaBi users to using the bikes to replace short-drive/long-walk trips, such as a run from home to pick up a sandwich, or something from the Market.

Based on recent rides along the Southern path, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them refill the Pool sometime in the next few weeks, although I’d be surprised if the new sidewalks/surfacing are in before, say Memorial Day. Altogether, it seems like they’re making good progress lately, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re aiming for an (unofficial) target of everything wrapped up before July 4th.

Had to put the balaclava and heavier gloves on this morning for my ride along the Potomac, but altogether, not a bad ride, and (in the District, at least), doesn’t look like it actually hit the freezing point.
