I think it would be good to remind ourselves why we do this crazy Freezing Saddles game every year. Here are my thoughts, and I welcome others’ perspectives as well:
1 – To have fun!
2 – To bring new bicyclists into our welcoming and friendly community
3 – To provide a little motivation to ride our bikes more during the dark, cold winter
4 – To have fun!
5 – To create excuses for doing fun things, like rides, and wacky side bets, and happy hours, and last night parties
6 – To build the community on this Forum, which supports cycling and all it entails in the DC region
7 – To have fun!…
Agreed. Which is why I don’t think there should be a Slackers “team,” but rather a small number of former players who just don’t want to fully play the game but want to be involved. Everyone else needs to register and play on a team. That’s what makes it fun (see #’s 1, 4 & 7 above)
I have to say, all of the things in Steve O’s list will happen. I joined this forum and didn’t know really anyone. I was pretty much a lurker. I hesitantly signed up and was put on a team, I didn’t know a single person on it. Of course I was worried about pulling my weight, but in the end it didn’t matter. It got me outside in weather I would never have considered riding in. I learned more about cold weather riding, and accomplished more than I ever thought I could. I made great friends (including Steve O!) and met lots of new people!
I still see these people out and about, I met people at happy hours, started going to Coffee clubs and now I feel part of a solid, welcoming, community. There is some good natured ribbing and trash talking (Raymo…), but I never saw anyone really getting abused if they weren’t riding.
I say, if your considering the slacker team, consider carefully! Honestly, I’ll miss my teammates from last year. We had a lot of fun. We didn’t do any group rides, since people have a lot of outside commitments, but we chatted here, on Strava and at happy hour. There was lots of encouragement and support.
We even got some awards at the end, a neat scarf. I say just do it. It can be as competitive as you want it to be, but it WILL BE fun. I promise.
I can’t wait to sign up, I’ve been waiting since last year’s ended.
I will beat last year’s miles too. I got knobby tires and fenders on my hybrid, now Freezing saddles bike.

You’ll just have to leave early! Problem solved!

Wait. When you got to work after riding two miles, the rim was cracked. But was it true?
IME a growing crack will take the wheel out of true. If the wheel was true when you left the shop and just as true at work, doesn’t that strongly suggest the rim was cracked when the bike left the shop?
Actually, while it looked true when I left the shop, meaning it looked fine when spun on the bike. I did not see the rim on a truing stand, I did notice that after I had left the shop, got about 1/2 mile away and hit the brakes, I could feel them catching and pulsing. I knew then that it wasn’t completely true. I said screw it, I was going to get it home and then go to a local shop in Alexandria and have them take a look. It was after I got back to work that I noticed the crack and called them to ask what happened.

That sort of rim failure is common. It just happens. Probably not the shop’s fault, my opinion. Possibly already like that, the cause of your wheel wobble. If so, they should have seen it when truing but possible to overlook, I guess? Curious but that sort of thing doesn’t happen in two miles, it takes some time. How many miles on the rim?
They’re the original rims that came on the bike, they have about 6500 miles on them. Also, thanks for the perspective.

ParticipantOh, also, If I’m completely wrong and this was all my fault and it was wrong of me to imply he screwed up my rim let me know. I just found the timing uncanny.

Cheap bib tights from Nashbar. Factory seconds due to a logo discoloration for $26.79. I have pair of these from last year and they’re not bad. They kept me warm into the upper 30s low 40s. The chamois is a little thin, but they’re definitely serviceable.

Or maybe they can stealth-plow the Arlington segment of MVT this winter without NPS noticing…I bet that’d still leave room in their $22M for other initiatives!
But….but…The cross country skiers!!! Where will they go?

Have Thoughts on Jones Point Park? Apparently NPS would like to hear them.
– Saturday, November 7, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Jones Point Park. Please note that the event is planned to take place outside under the Wilson Bridge. In case of inclement weather, portions of the meeting will take place in the Visitor Comfort Station under the Wilson Bridge. Parking is available at the site.
This is brilliant! The Visitor Comfort Station is the bathroom. Will the women and men have to have separate meetings if it is nasty out then?

Gnats!
Yesterday was terrible near the marine on the MVT. Since I sweat so much and am covered in ample fur I end up having gnats all stuck on me. On my face, in my beard, neck and up and down my arms. I’m a gnat collector!

One section of the newly located trail on the MVT might be open this afternoon. I stopped and spoke to a contractor this morning who said they were going to be putting down temporary lane markings and hope to open the section this afternoon.

Sweet! I’m still going to ride through the airport until the other detour is gone. That one is the worst! But progress is progress I suppose. Also Casey, it was great meeting you and chatting with you a couple of Saturdays ago!

I accidentally discovered this variation on the southbound route through Crystal City posted by Emm, by missing the turn to 27th St.

I like it. While I was looking for the turn to get to Potomac Ave (and still missing it
) I looked over my shoulder and saw a line of cars trailing behind me on the left lane on Clark. Sorry folks! The tweaked route lets me get to the right lane of Clark, out of the way of motorists, then make the right turn to Potomac without a traffic light, with little motorist traffic to speak of in between.
Pretty sweet fall evening ride overall.
That’s the way I’ve been going! It works just fine for me. I kept screwing up cutting through the airport. Are you riding Potomac Ave all the way to Main Line Blvd? Or do you get back on 4 Mile run and get back on the MVT?

ParticipantFare thee well! We’ll always have FS2014. You were an inspiring teammate!

Ooof! Crystal Drive was a mess tonight. I guess it’s being prepped for the milling and repaving. Lots of trucks, cones and blocked off lanes. I certainly would rather negotiated all that on a bike than in a car, but it still wasn’t fun. I’m thinking Eads to 12th to Long Bridge for tomorrow’s commutes. Or I could give up and just walk the chips.
I’m going to guiltily confess that I haven’t been walking my bike on those chips. Oh, I tried it, but walking in those chips in my shoes with cleats was a painful, slow and slippery. I can get through them easier by just dropping to my easy gears and spinning through them.
The new detour where we cross the ramp sucks, mainly because when heading southbound, it just ends at a curb and will dump you right into oncoming traffic. So, climb up the hill, stop (there was a backup) and wait until there’s a gap. Going north should be just as bad since you’ll be hopping up a curb and landing in slippery loose mulch. There must be a better solution.

ParticipantI’m not sure I understand, are there police enforcing stops on Union all the time now? Everyday? AM/PM rush?
