ParticipantIt’s meant for hispters, so they can ride bullhorns and throw shifters on them. You can keep your flannel fixie deep v neon purple wheels riding bike and nobody will notice how conformist you really are with those gear thingys. Now if they only made a gryoscope for assisted trackstands.

The article came out today. It was pretty bad, all about how terribly unsafe bike commuting is. Next time she comes around asking for stuff from us, I recommend everyone ignoring her.
Oh, she won’t be back. She got what she wanted. That article is terrible, a shameless attention grabbing headline in the era of clickbaiting. For those who didn’t read it yet, the pro’s and con’s of cycling to work, here is a summary:
CONS: You’re going to be killed, most likely being hit by bus or car.
PROS: You’re probably going to be slightly healthier from all the cycling when you are killed, most likely being hit by bus or car. The odds of being killed, most likely being hit by bus or car, is slightly less in DC than elsewhere.Fin

Carbon, Steel, or Aluminum??
Steel!!!! Then carbon! You’re already riding aluminum, mix it up a bit. Sadly though, no rack and fender mounts on the Warbird. Womp womp.

….So here is the question. If I saw a huge improvement moving from a commuter city bike to a CX bike ~ would I see improvement moving to an adventure / endurance bike? I mean I know I have to train harder if I ever want to play with the big kids and play hooky on Fridays. But is an adventure / endurance bike gonna help me with range and ability to ride.
I love the Green Bike. It has improved my riding ability significantly. What I love the most is good long rides. The C&O. Gap. Even, if I have to, the WOD. I want a bike I can just ride.
So if I get an adventure bike – how different would it be from a CX bike. Is it marketing fluff? Will I feel as much difference I feel between the CX and the commuter? Will I be able to ride to Pittsburgh and back?? Will I be able to beat Tim up hills??
Buy the Roadhouse! You know you want to. I want to!

Agreed! This is “The Enthusigator” and a snapper he saw on the CCT last week after we had ridden together! I think he nicknamed him Bitey.

ParticipantSpecialized is running a sale on tires, buy one get one free. They’re selling them on their website, and the local shops, at least Spokes Etc. is running the sale too. I was at 5000 miles on my gator hardshells, and I broke a spoke last Thursday, Since I needed tires anyway, I bought them when I had my spoke replaced and wheels trued.
Only certain tires are eligible, and you can order them from specialized.com too with this promo.
The following tires are BOGO
S-works turbo
Turbo pro
Roubaix pro
Roubaix Armadillo elite
All condition armadillo elite
All condition armadillo
Espoir eliteI bought a pair of the heaviest tires they have, armadillo elite. I’ll find out tomorrow if they are as decent as my gator hardshells. I was planning on buying Continentals GP4000 IIs or all seasons, but I couldn’t pass up the 2 for 1. All seasons at Spokes were 79.00 a tire!

First morning commute for me since November!
I’m still getting used to riding a road bike with conventional derailleurs, so i took it slow and easy. Plus I had my Freezing Saddles “Lowest average MPH” award for inspiration!
It did look for a while that this ride wasn’t going to happen on the Renegade because the valve on the rear tire kept hissing every time I tried to put the cap back on. Then I realized the Presta valve adapter for my pump had loosened a couple of screw-like things in the valve. Whew!
It was overcast with mist/light rain constantly in my face but it was so great to be out there again.
Welcome back GovernerSilver! Glad to see you back out there! I’m actually quite surprised we haven’t run into each other on the MVT yet, but I’ll keep my eye out for your Renegade.

I was up at Trails End Cycling in Purcelville a couple weeks ago, and he had the Topeak Beamrack in stock:

This seems like a much better design and implementation compared to the tailfin… but that’s just me…
Yeah, but you wouldn’t want to wrench that thing onto a carbon fiber seatpost. I’ve used something similar on my road bike for a few weeks and a I did not like the way it made the bike handle when loaded. It puts a lot of torsional stress on the seat post and you can feel the sway of it. Also it looked kind of ridiculous.
I think the idea is good, but have some issues with execution, such as the rod that feeds through the rack to mount the pannier. Some of the bumps on the CCT are really harsh, I just don’t know how it could hold up to impact like that over time. I’m happy with my axiom rack (streamliner disc), which mounts to my rear wheel skewer and seat post clamp I bought that has mounting points for screws. I can take it off in about 5 minutes or less. This rack for me, it would be like upgrading from aluminum to carbon!
Sethpo and I are both buying them, we talked about it on the Tweeter.

ParticipantThis morning I rode out on the W&OD a bit before heading to work. I found this on the street! This was at the corner of N. Spring St. and the trail. Not very far from Bikenetic! You could put it in the shop!

ParticipantForgot to update! The CCT was clear as of yesterday afternoon, there is still some scattered light debris here, but I assume that will make its way off the trail eventually.

ParticipantThis morning was wet and misty, and damp. The #CCT was covered in lots of debris from the storms. Rode with my friend the Enthusigator up the CCT and we encountered several large downed branches, and a tree blocking the trail! You could get around the tree but had to carry the bike.
We cleared two large and heavy branches, and several cyclists and runners stopped to help. Seeing community in action is always refreshing!
One of the branches partially blocking the trail, you can see my orange helmet on the other side of it.

ParticipantTrees down across the CCT as of this morning, reports are coming in that they are being cleared now. Will update after I ride through on my way home tonight. Lots of debris from last nights storm. The Enthusigator and I cleared a couple of large fallen branches off the trail, with the help of some passing cyclists. There was one big one down that we had to carry our bikes around.

Thanks to Pete Beers and Bikenetic I have a new 54 Jamis Renegade ELITE that will be my stateside bike replacing a 30 year old Raleigh that has a cracked seat tube and was always breaking spokes.

That looks like the EXPLOIT. The Elite is carbon. Curse you tall people with deep pockets and multiple bikes…

ParticipantFor anyone riding the Mount Vernon Trail, they did some work on the ramp that exits the airport, crosses the MVT and runs to the parkway. They seem to have taken the road surface down a significant amount. At this point be aware when crossing the ramp and there are now two pretty jarring bumps where the trail drops down to the road surface.

ParticipantI saw dbb!!! And strangely enough, I think the girl riding the unicycle works with me in Bethesda???
Nice video btw! I can’t wait to go to ALL the pit stops! Oh the irony of never making it into work on bike to work day.
