ParticipantI think the official leaderboard won’t clear out the [apparently?] bogus entry(s) from Mark Williams until it does the daily refresh.

I am happy to provide some numbers if you like. A surprising number of the top warmest rides (especially if you consider distance) are actually right here.
Note that these are only individual rides. I can get a sum of miles above X temperature or something more complex, if desired. This might also be one of the better ones for human interpretation, since I’m sure everyone feels that rides out in the desert during ‘freezing saddles’ are more “unfreezing” than the 70F local rides.

ParticipantI’m Hans, the guy on the left from this few-year-old race-day photo:

I work for a small software engineering company out in Reston that has very cycling-friendly benefits — and even sponsors a cycling team (we have a 9-person team for a ~100-person company, so that seems like a good ratio; and there are other more casual cyclists here that aren’t on the team).I tend to do most of my riding during the week (commuting). As it’s getting warmer I’ll be doing more riding with my son; he loves his iGo:

And this is when I’m out doing a weekend road ride or a longer pre-work morning ride:

ParticipantYou are right, sorry to create confusion; what I said was subtly different than what you wrote. I don’t know the cron schedule for the official leaderboard. I was planning to ensure my sync script runs at 9:30 or just after and basically any subsequent runs would fail the “is it before end of competition?” check.
It sounds like Ron’s method may have a little gray area (e.g. if he’s not tired by 9:30 — maybe out cycling himself!), but I think the gist here is to make sure rides are uploaded by 9:30 to guarantee they count. I am assuming that Ron will make any necessary allowances for the sync schedule if his script.

ParticipantI will have my site/db follow the same rules for consistency. — i.e. Rides have to be *uploaded* by 9:30 pm to count.

To be fair, it is harder to get a good MTB workout inside the beltway due to the lack of, well, mountains.
Yes, it’s true that inside the beltway there are very few mountain biking options, but just outside the beltway there are lots of miles to be had. I would say that mountain biking can be a much better — or at least full-body — workout than road biking, but I would also agree that riding at 5mph on pavement is probably not going to work wonders.
Ultimately, though, there is nothing about a heavy mountain bike that will prevent you from losing weight/getting in shape. — Any more than there is something about a light road bike that will facilitate it. It’s just exercise; push yourself and you will get results.
Of course, once you bike more, you will probably want to get a lighter/faster bike for road riding — or a fancier mtb for off-road trail riding. That constant urge to upgrade equipment is just a symptom of cycling. At least that’s what I tell myself.

Thanks for the help W&OD riders!!
I would have said it would still be messy, but I am not sure. It is warmer out than I was expecting. I would love to know how it looks (how slushy it is still) tonight so I know if I should change my tires. I will check your Strava. I assume it will not be frozen this evening, in any event, so you should be ok.

Did I pass you this morning? Not many cyclist on the trails – I was riding east on the WOD from Vienna on a black & blue Felt CX. I think I just figured out who Lena is – on a MTB, think i saw her riding west on shreve road to avoid the icy WOD this morning?
Yes, I think you did see me / I saw you — cool. I was riding my cx/touring bike (silver w/ silver fenders). Lena rides an orange cx/touring bike also w/ full (silver) fenders & black paniers, so maybe that was someone else riding west on shreve. I rode/walked with her on the trail from Shreve and then we got on the road at Virginia intersection and detoured around the hill that leads down to 495 bridge.

Lena! Go Ochos!
Yeah, I rode/walked part of the way with Lena this AM. It was pretty awful riding conditions. We took a detour to skip the hill after 66, which was of course, solid ice, but then getting on around Gallows was still horrid. I ended up riding on ahead between Gallows and Vienna; I think I fell twice and caught myself a few other times; the “double track” through the snow there looked very rideable, but it was mostly riding on ice. Thought things might just “be fine” west of Vienna, but no so much.
Took me twice as long as normal to get into work; I am glad I left early!
I do even have studded tires. I don’t know why I didn’t mount them; I looked at my phone weather & it said 33F, so I figured it hadn’t gotten below freezing and the trail would just be slushy. I was obviosly wrong
Beautiful morning, though. Hard to complain too much when this is really all by choice.

ParticipantI have the minimal Tubus Fly rack that is fantastic for carrying panier(s) and adds less than 1lb to the bike. I actually don’t need it, though, as I’ve decided that I hate riding bikes with racks & would rather wear a backpack (or plan my week ahead and skip the backpack too), so I would be open to parting with it and my Ortlieb metro panier bag at steep discount if you still are looking for a rack (and think that the Tubus Fly would be a good fit).

ParticipantI personally will only be able to shirk my family responsibilities for one evening, so if it’s all on the 21st that works well, but if the happy hour is later I will probably just go to the happy hour and skip the awards ceremony.
Is there any concern over having to pay $25-$30 to attend the awards ceremony? Perhaps not; I’m sure we all agree it’s for a good cause (I definitely am a huge fan of what Phoenix Bikes is doing), but it’s not exactly pocket change. OTOH, I’m sure it’ll help them with their fundraising if a significant portion of the BAFS group does attend.
